Main Deck

This is an optimization of my previous midrange mill deck that tried to extend the game with control and creatures like Fog Bank, Royal Assasin and Avatar of Woe. It was a nice deck, but against today's modern meta is just too slow.

Optimizations:

  • The new addition of the well known mill crabs accelerate the mill to a pretty decent speed
  • Mana has been optimized by the addition of Fetch lands and Shock lands as well as more duals. The number of lands has been increased to 20 , to keep the crabs happy.
  • Some spells have been substituted by more optimal versions now that we can afford the mana (Mind Sculpt -> Glimpse the Unthinkable, Mana Leak -> Counterspell). Others have been removed to streamline the deck strategy, like Redirect, super cool & fun, but doesn't have much synergy with the deck, or Royal Assassin, too slow and very susceptible to get killed before doing anything, and Avatar of Woe, which rarely saw the board.

> Mill

Mind Funeral - The deck's staple. At worst you milled 4 lands, at best you milled half the library or more. Land a few crabs (pun intended) and this could be a finisher.

Hedron crab / Ruin crab - Your personal squad of mind magic amplifier crustaceans, along with their big momma, the Consuming Aberration.

Glimpse the Unthinkable - The best cost effective mill your mana can afford. If your mana is not optimized, try Mind Scuplt.

Fraying Sanity - A bit slow, but there's nothing better than repeating that same mill after a good mill. Pull this on turn 3 and mill 20 cards with a 2 mana Glimpse the Unthinkable on turn 4. Sphinx's Tutelage is another option, or you can outright remove it and use the 2 slots for something else.

> Card Draw

Visions of Beyond - It can give you those 3 draws pretty early after a good mill. Gotta keep those cards rolling! Cling to dust is another good option that can provide additional Life Gain (but you need to cast it from graveyard for 3B :^/). There's also the combination of Thought Scour and Pilfered Plans

> Counters & Removals

Drown in the loch - The best, great versatility and power. Can be replaced/combined with Fatal Push / Go for the throat in case you find graveyard hate or you're not running fetch/shock lands.

Counterspell - Run this only if you've optimized mana curve by using fetch/shock lands. Use Mana Leak otherwise.

> Life Gain

Profane Memento - This is a beast when you have the crabs out or you land a juicy Mind Funeral. If you're facing a burn, control or combo heavy meta, you can remove this and add more counters.

Nighthawk Scavenger - Life gain, nasty deathtouch, flies, can hit hard after landing a Mind Funeral or a Glimpse the Unthinkable. This guy is prepared!

> Sideboard

Surgical Extraction - Extremely good synergy with mill. An amazing card with amazing art.

Now for the remaining 11 cards you can choose from many options:

> Mass Removal x2

Aetherize - For a token heavy meta
Damnation
Infest

> More Removal x3

Baleful Mastery
Fatal Push
Hero's Downfall
Go for the throat

> Hand info x3

Thoughtseize - If money is an issue you have Distress and Duress
Inquisition of Kozilek
Grief

> Graveyard Hate x3

Cling to dust - Provides decent versatility with Life Gain and/or Card Draw. It has to be casted from graveyard with a hefty cost though
Crypt Incursion - In case you need (even) more Life Gain
Tormod's Crypt
Grafdigger's Cage
