Hoo boi, this is something that I've been brewing for a while. Vilis, Broker of Blood, is an insane flying, 8/8 commander. His first ability, B, pay 2 life: Target creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn
is awesome. A removal ability that gets around indestructible? Sign me up. Most importantly though, is his passive. "Whenever you lose life, draw that many cards."
Oh man. You have got to be kidding me. Probably the spiciest thing to ever be printed on a mono-black commander. So many things can happen. Literally the only reason you would ever debate making a Vilis, Broker of Blood deck, is that awful 8 CMC. That's a lot of mana.
My build has basically two sections: Things that let you lose life efficiently (ie. draw cards), and things that ramp to 8 mana as quickly as possible.
Let's begin with the spicy, life loss.
First off, many just normal, regular black cards, like Read the Bones, Ancient Craving, Tarnished Citadel, and Night's Whisper, are just extremely amped in value.
Black tutors like Vampiric Tutor, Plunge into Darkness, and Ad Nauseam, become absolutely broken. So many things become absolutely broken! Bolas's Citadel, Reanimate, Greed, Erebos, God of the Dead, Psychosis Crawler. The list goes on. It's absolutely insane, and I love it so much.
Losing life all the time sucks. It has to be balanced with lifegain somehow. Venser's Journal is a really good one. Aetherflux Resevoir isn't bad either. It can definitely be tough though, so make sure you're always keeping your most important resource in check. It helps that no one will want to deal damage to you though, as you will get a huge advantage for it.
Lastly, the ramp conversation. 8 mana is a lot of mana. And if it is ever countered or removed (which your table will learn to do quickly), it can be tough to get it back. Black also has a bad history with being able to ramp, and it is quite tough if you don't want to break bank. Cabal Coffers, despite its price, is an auto-include, as is Cabal Stronghold, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, and Magus of the Coffers. Mana doublers, like Bubbling Muck, Caged Sun, Nirkana Revenant, and Crypt Ghast are also integral. Liliana of the Dark Realms is in here for her ultimate, the ramp, but I haven't tested this deck enough to know how easy it is to get there.
And there you have it. If you ever go to fix it, https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/vilis-suicide-black-cedh-primer/
Basically just add Faith of the Devoted
