> Notes

Why is this the deck for Alex?

  1. He gets to play mind games with his opponents
  2. He gets to put opponents into positions where they have to make impossible decisions
  3. It's more focused on interesting choices and player interaction than basic card value, really challenges the zeitgeist

Deck Notes:

  • As far as this deck is concerned, the key ability of Questing Beast's many abilities is that your creatures cannot have their damage prevented (although don't forget his other abilities; un-chump-blockable is a another pretty relevant one to remember). Beyond that, this deck is a little weird. There are a lot more Fog cards than you'd ever normally use, because they take advantage of Questing Beast's ability, but there aren't enough to do it every turn (although some are permanent like Bubble Matrix, and some are visible deterrents, like Spore Frog). There are also plenty of deathtouch creatures, but there probably aren't enough to call it deathtouch tribal. So what do you do with all this? Couple of things:
  • First, a kind of alternate wincon: poison counters. It's a pretty tilting way to lose, but it's an option, but at least it's only barely an option. It's not a dedicated infect deck that's trying to do a non-interactive win on turn 3. Fynn, the Fangbearer will give "infect" to almost all of your creatures, so casting Overrun while he's out will make a lot of progress. So will Triumph of the Hordes. That's basically it, plus the bare minimum possibility of proliferating poison counters (eg Karn's Bastion). Fynn and Triumph are both extra interesting if you have Invasion of Ikoria flipped so that you can deal damage as though your creatures weren't blocked.
  • Second: the real fun part, which is making your opponents make hard choices. Will they attack if you have Spore Frog and Questing Beast out? Probably not, because you can save all of your creatures and kill all of theirs. But they have to get that Spore Frog out of the way if they ever want to attack you, but do they make that sacrifice and leave themselves open to attack from the rest of the table? What if you have Lure on Questing Beast? They won't want to leave their creatures untapped, so they have to attack someone else, right? You'll be doing really meaningful combat damage even without Overwhelming Stampede or Triumph of the Hordes, so they can't just leave you alone forever. I know these aren't flashy combos, but your cards start to add up to more than the sum of their parts, and with the weird interactions between attacking with deathtouch/vigilance and the threat of one-sided fogs, I think the deck can be pretty effective. Even if it's not always a winner, the intent is that it makes a fun and interesting game for the whole table.
