Merfolk is one of my favourite decks in Modern, but it's pretty inaccessible at the moment because of the inclusion of Aether Vial, Cavern of Souls, Mutavault, etc. The purpose of this deck is to see if it's possible to play a version of the deck that doesn't include these powerful, hella expensive cards and still have some succss, and I'm happy to report that it's been somewhat successful.
The two major drawbacks of losing our expensive cards are that the deck loses some of it's trickiness (flashing in a Lord with Vial), and some of it's resilience to wraths (because we can't swing in with vault post boardwipe). However, while this does decrease the power of the deck, we can still flood the board and grow our dorks remarkably quickly, and with incidental phoenix/dredge hate in Mistcaller, we can actually race some of the faster decks in the format pretty effectively.
This is a great place to start if you're considering Merfolk in Modern (which I highly recommend you do), with a really straightforward upgrade plan if you like the deck. As always, any and all suggestions are much appreciated!
