Having talked to my pod, they were happy to let me use a planeswalker as my commander, despite not otherwise being a legal commander.
This deck has a theme of "What would Nicol Bolas want to do?"
And then you do that.
This is my second take on the deck, after running it for the almost a year now. As much as I wanted to use various Deserts, because Amonkhet made it appropriate to do so, the fact that Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God (the commander) is an inflexible 3 black pips, it meant that I needed more colour sources than colourless. So I put in a few more dual-coloured lands to try and get around that. But this deck is definitely slow, with a high average CMC and some somewhat slow tap lands. That could be fixed by spending more money on more shock and fetch lands that are faster, but this deck is meant to be a bit clunky and funky. To that effect, see the Tokens section for cards that almost made it into the deck.
This deck also struggles against flying creatures, with few ways to block fliers or other forms of evasion without playing removal. Removal is honestly this deck's main saving grace, because without it, the deck really struggles with blockers. That's the reason the God-Eternal Bontu and God-Eternal Kefnet are there - they're just over qualified blockers.
Cards that lived in the deck for a while or almost made it into the deck, are in the Tokens board.
I removed Grave Betrayal for Bolas' Citadel. I'd never managed to have it in hand / on the board with a removal piece in hand (like Damnation). The closest I ever got, I'd gotten a few Planeswalkers out and was ready to ultimate a few of them anyway and win the game (the opposing Flash tribal deck took great exception to that, and I didn't end up winning that game anyway ahaha). But Bolas' Citadel is super on flavour, and known for its power.
Branch out and include more planeswalkers. There's a large collection of Planeswalkers from this faction that thinks they're "cool" and "doing the right thing" and "have a correct moral compass", called the Gatewatch. Now, they've got good cards sure, but they're filthy members of the Gatewatch. If you could look past that, then they might be okay. But that's too great a concession from me.
Note Propoganda DOES NOT WORK to protect planeswalkers. Take it out!
I removed Toxic Deluge for Hour of Devastation. Is it worse? For certain, costs more mana to likewise get around indestructible. But is it thematic? Sure is!
I removed Blasphemous Act for Crux of Fate. Again for flavour, and also it keeps Nicol Bolas and Nicol Bolas, the Ravager, alive if that ever comes up in an edge case.
Contagion Clasp really should go in, but I never found a local seller.
Consider getting more versions of Tezzeret planeswalkers in there, and/or Geyadrone Dihada.
