Commanders

This deck has 5 sets of legal commanders, most of which are in the sideboard. They all do different things, so pick the one that you like the most. I'll probably go with Xenagos, in the deck that I copied from, Xenagos was better than Atarka, World Render, but all the below are viable;

  • Xenagos, God of Revels is amazing. Indestructible enchantment, he almost never dies (few people pack exile for a non-creature). He makes sure that if you can cast a dragon and get to combat, they're attacking and hitting hard. Less good if you can get a board state to stick for several turns however. That said, he sticks around like poo on the bottom of your shoe, and any 5/5 flier that's now a 10/10 with haste is very relevant to most board states.
  • Atarka, World Render, is all about getting the most dragons to do the most pain. In more casual metas or if people just don't bring removal, she's queen. She does the most damage of all the commanders.
  • Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient is awesome as high end ramp. I don't know if the deck has enough draw to power out from his draws and not mana flood, so if you want to make this permanently the commander, perhaps put in 2 more draw (harmonize, something else of your choice), and remove Reshape the Earth and Dictate of Karametra
  • Ganax, Astral Hunter + Acolyte of Bahamut. Acolyte is amazing, but does nothing until Ganax is out. Possibly mid-game a better ramp commander than Klauth, but late game probably worse.
  • Dragonlord Artarka is honestly the worst. Don't bother with her, sorry, she's in just the regular Dragons section.

The idea of this deck is that it can either be a monored deck, or it can be a red-green deck. If it's in the Green Only area, then run those 29 cards when you're doing GR. Likewise, if you're going monored, use the Red Only section's 31 cards and do not use the Green Only.

For Red & Green, the commander is Atarka, World Render. Every dragon gets double strike, thankfully not a complicated end goal. The alternative commander is Xenagos, God of Revels. He functions as the better commander in 1v1 games, due to his indestructible tag and lower mana cost (CMC5 instead of CM7). I find in 1v1, I don't get out as many threats simultaneously, and when they do come out, I need them to be hasted and making moves. It's more reliable than the Red Only, because it has more ramp spells, but it does only have 27 dragons compared to the mono red's 32.

For Red only, the commanders are Lathliss, Dragon Queen or Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded. For much the same reasons as above, Purphoros is better in 1v1 as he just gets big stompy things out with haste, or he can cheat them out for 1 turn. Lathliss' strategy is likewise reliant on you casting non-token dragons. For those of you with good maths, you'll notice there's 29 in Green-Only, but 31 in the Red only. The difference is that you take out Artaka and Xenagos, who are in the sideboard and Red-Green, thus not legal for mono red. Lathliss and Purphoros are meant to be in both decks.

If you want to turn this into a Chaos Deck, then take the dragons that are in the Token area, take all your other red-only dragons (not including Lathliss), and shuffle them together, and draw 23 dragons. Balefire Dragon is an expensive card that's not needed, though really nice to have. If you're cutting cards, that's one to lose.

Death By Dragons and Hunted Dragon are both political tools, and just really good fun at a casual table. The line "Hey guys, that person over there is the nemesis right? If I give you all a 5/5 dragon, can you send it at them?", is super fun. Likewise, Hunted Dragon can gain you an ally and help prop up whoever is currently struggling at the table - perhaps they missed land drops or just keep drawing dead cards off the top of their library - and 3 knights that are 2/2's are nice.

This is currently being playtested. In a few months, perhaps I'll make a v1.05. Things like Chariot of Victory might be swapped with O-Naginata because in theory, I thing First Strike and Haste are better to have, but maybe I'm finding I'd rather my trample-giver have an additional +3/+0 because dragons are bulky enough as it is.
