Mardu Blink is a weird one. The more I work on it the more I realize how janky and rad it is.
Deck is always under construction
Writing this out helps me build decks and rethink choices
This deck started out as a generic Akido build. It has a Sunforger package and focused on sitting back while opponents duel it out. The problem is Queen Marchesa doesn't have an activated ability and too often my board state gets boring with nothing to interact with. Maybe something like "(2): Goad target creature" or if the assassin token ability had Eminence and tracked Monarch even when she was in the Command Zone, idk.
I still enjoy pushing opponents into combat and using Sunforger(as an after thought). So where do you go? Marchesa is an open build commander and I saw two paths: A ton of Ghostly Prison + Court of Ambition cards or lose & regain the Monarchy via assassin &/ blink. Kaya being a flavor win pushed me towards blink.
I get it, Marchesa doesn't have blink stapled on her, but she does have card draw and politics. So I went with the idea that everything is some sort of value engine based off pushing opponents to kill each other while I build up an empire.
I'm not going the Panharmonicon route. There are plenty of decks the abuse the tech more efficiently. Too many cards in this deck wouldn't work if they triggered twice: Kardur, Doomscourge, Queen Marchesa, etc. Moreover, I think it's key to not put yourself in the spotlight by triggering too many abilities and instead net 1 per turn with the value engine mindset. Blink Kardur, Doomscourge once a turn to get everyone on the Goad train, Blink the Recruiters for additional toolboxing, Blink Palace Jailer to regain the Monarch and/or Exile creatures.
I run Strionic Resonator in contrast. It covers territory in both combat control and blink.
Is this the prime build? No, but it's something different and commander is entertaining when you put your own spin on it.
The glory of the deck comes from silently manipulating the game and not garnering too much attention. Too often the board gets gummed up and everyone waits for Craterhoof or a combo win. I prefer to get the show rolling with “Creatures must attack” clauses.
I don't protect the crown anymore. If someone takes it, I get it back right after netting the 1/1 Assassin
