Blue janko combo deck. As it turns out, Kari combos with a ham sandwich and a clone spell.
Budget. Wow. As it turns out, this strategy is cheap and effective. You can easily make it better with a variety of more expensive cards.
No, this is not a pure control deck. Yes it can be pretty controlling, but it isn't a control deck. This is a goofy fun self-mill deck with the singular purpose of janking out a lot of value by recurring instants and sorceries.
Why Kairi?
A: He is exotic. Very few people have made a Kairi deck despite the fact that he is incredibly fun and versatile.
B: His loop is really quite elegant. Clone Kairi, activate his second ability, bring back the clone spell and a spell of your choice, functionally draw up to six new instants or sorceries.
C: Onboard removal and protection as well as a nice body. Kairi has ward 3, AKA spend a turn to kill him, he is a flying 6/6 so he is hard to attack. He also has his second ability which bounces permanents up to cmc 6. Any amount. Bounce all the non-clone tokens you don't like (clone tokens have their original cmc), and then permanents up to cmc 6. Hits everything, sets people back. No it isn't permanent, but it's often long enough.
D: Have you played clone decks? Hilarious.
Our win condition is usually something to do with a lot of gilded lotuses, or a lot of milled cards. This deck has lots of things to do. It's very dynamic with a surprisingly good curve thanks to looting. Make sure you have a good amount of lands or a clone spell on deck, or your life will be not so good. Thanks to recursion, unless something horrible has happened, there is always something to do.
Exploit the fact that clones of certain cards are actually, well, really good, or really fun. Or both.
Fun other guys to duplicate:
Wandering Archaic: Get three out? Borrow everyone's spells, even their boardwipes and protections.
Battlefield Thaumaturge, Curious Homonculus: Suddenly that Rite of Replication or Saheeli's Artistry is a pretty cheap spell.
Solemn Simulacrum: Lands, anyone?
Spark Double: A large amount of potentially any legendary creature?? I see no problem here...
Murmuring Mystic: Birds.
Certain cards are a bit unusual or have extra synergy, so let me explain them:
Pongify, Resculpt, Curse of the Swine, Ravenform, etc: All token removal spells are unnaturally strong. They create 0 cmc tokens! You can bounce them all for literally free! These removal spells now actually have no downside.
Wash Out: Honestly doesn't really need explaining. In mono-blue its usually just a slightly worse cyclonic rift.
Theoretical Duplication: Fun for borrowing cool creatures.
Mystic Reflection: Maybe one of the strongest cards here, secretly. Make anything into something basically worthless, for removal. This isn't temporary, this is until it dies. Make your opponent's strong commander into a llanowar elves. Or abuse it yourself! You can make any creature into a strictly better one. (still better for removal imho)
Clear the Mind / Psychic Spiral: You actually don't deck yourself. Bonus points to Psychic Spiral for being instant speed and for milling an opponent for all those graveyard cards. Fun wincon.
Step Through: Obviously Wizardcycling. You might not have noticed, we have a lot of wizards, and we have Orvar the All-Form (who is secretly a wizard, too).
Long-Term Plans: Funny card. A regular tutor in blue, too. If you need / want a certain card, you can likely get it. Just be careful not to spill it out with Kairi's ability.
Visions of Duplicity: Maybe you have never been hit by this spell, but I promise it will never really trade creatures in a way that benefits you. Think commanders or important guys. This 3 mana spell will often be more effective than destruction or exile, especially on commanders.
How do we win, here?
Well, I have (so far) found a decent few. There are more.
High Tide, Frantic Search, Kairi loop: Best if you can make 2 Kairi rather than just one per loop. Will generate infinite mana, and from there, you can handily deck people.
Orvar, the All-Form, Gilded Lotus, Saheeli's Artistry, Kairi: Infinite Gilded Lotus Infinite mana that turn with any cost reduction.
A sufficient amount of instant / sorcery cost reducers plus a lot of spells will kinda just create goofy combo lines. It's pretty fun to explore, and I'm sure you can find ways to have a lot of fun with it. Think Clone Legion, Replication Technique, or Rite of Replication.
This deck is a combo deck. Sorry, it just kind of is. But it's a dreadfully inefficient combo deck. You could theoretically tutor out all the pieces really fast, but it's much more fun to take the time to make copies of random permanents on the battlefield and break the game in other ways. The fun part about clone decks is oftentimes someone else will have a piece with way more interesting win-cons than the deck has. Please take this idea and run with it.
