Overview

Mizzix Turbo Storm is a somewhat competitive deck that aims to quickly cycle through the library in a single turn to find win conditions and increase the storm count through a combination of cheap cantrips and mana-on-spellcast effects. Most games, once you have cast more than 10 spells in a single turn the game is over, as the large amount of different win conditions means that counterspells are irrelevant once the combo has started.

>General Gameplan

In the early game, Mizzix Turbo Storm aims to play ramp spells, get out Mizzix, and cast advantageous draw spells to explore the deck. Some other cards such as Izzet Guildmage and Firemind's Research can be played early to set up later combos. Discarding cards which are not immediately useful to be replaced with cantrips and mana generators, then they can later be recurred with cards like Underworld Breach and Past in Flames.

Mid game is when you will be beginning to look to start the combo. False starts can occur when you run out of card draw/mana and typically happen when beginning a combo without Archmage Emeritus/Niv-Mizzet, Parun/Mana Generator Creatures. Running out of mana isn't nearly as bad as running out of card draw, as no card draw means that you are left at the mercy of your next topdeck, while with no mana the combo can resume next turn. From here Mizzix can be used to decrease the mana cost of spells down to 1-2, and Underworld Breach can be used to recur important draw and mana cards.

>Combos

Play Izzet Guildmage, then cast Lava Spike with Desperate Ritual spliced onto it. Then, copy it with Izzet Guildmage's ability. This copy will then resolve dealing 3 damage and giving enough mana to copy the initial spell again. This combo can additionally be replicated with Reach Through Mists to draw through the entirety of your deck.

Same as above but without the finisher, allows for infinite spellcasts to trigger the effects of cards such as Archmage Emeritus, Runaway Steam-Kin, Birgi, God of Storytelling, and Aetherflux Reservoir.

First, play Underworld Breach and then Frantic Search. This will allow you quickly cycle through your deck and increase storm count without relying on lucky card draws. Also very strong with Gamble to tutor for Lava Spike + Ritual, Increasing Vengeance to triple other draw spells, and Grapeshot to quickly deal a large amount of damage from a low storm counter.

Play any 7+ mana generator and Reiterate it, then once the copied spell goes off recast for infinite mana. Can also gain infinite mana with Reiterate, Bonus Round and any +Mana spell. At 40 life this combo can be started with a single Treasonous Ogre.

Play Niv-Mizzet, Parun and enchant it with Curiosity. Then, draw a card in any way. This will allow you to draw through the rest of your deck and deal 60-90 damage, killing the most threatening opponents. Then, with your entire hand at your disposal, combo and finish off with whatever.

>Why in Deck

Mizzix of the Izmagus
Mizzix is a commander that allows for cheap spellcasts and few of the other u/r commanders directly benefit storm to the same degree as Mizzix. In this deck, due to the already low cost of cards, he does not benefit as much as he could, however removing the last few colourless mana from spells goes a long way towards ensuring that the deck can chain spells throughout the entire deck.

Archmage Emeritus
Cheapest draw on spellcast creature available to blue. Very crucial in smoothing out draw sequences.

Birgi, God of Storytelling
Despite the flip artifact being quite powerful, this card will almost never be cast in that form, as the mana gain provided by the creature side is instrumental in chaining together spells quickly.

Runaway Steam-Kin
Slightly cheaper and more limited Birgi, just as good.

Storm-Kiln Artist
As it creates treasure tokens, this is one of the few cards in this deck that can generate blue mana from spells. Additionally, Storm-Kiln Artist allows for mana to be saved for future turns in case of false starts.

Izzet Guildmage
Allows for several infinite combos, and also allows for spending excess mana to copy cantrips and draw extra cards. Very susceptible to removal but cheap enough to cast early. Additionally, as the ability is instant speed, can combo off the moment it is targeted to get around -1/-1 and kill effects.

Underworld Breach
At worst, it allows for a recast of a few draw cantrips already in the graveyard. At best, it is an incredibly powerful recursion tool that allows you to win the game as soon as it is played. As it allows for chain casting of the same spell, it combos with spells such as Wheel of Fortune and Frantic Search to quickly cycle through the majority of your deck while refueling the graveyard. From here, you can play combo pieces from the graveyard and quickly end the game with the majority of your library available to play.

Increasing Vengeance
Copying a Treasure Cruise or Frantic Search is powerful enough, but when combined with Underworld Breach the additional cast makes it a cut above all other Fork clones. Additionally, can copy with Izzet Guildmage to copy higher cost spells such as Mana Geyser or Treasure Cruise

Desperate Ritual
Can be cast normally as a generic mana refueler, but can also be spliced onto a Lava Spike or Reach Through Mists and copied with a Underworld Breached Increasing Vengeance or an Izzet Guildmage in order to quickly draw through the entirety of your deck or kill all opponents.

Bonus Round
Double spells is incredibly powerful when combined with draw cantrips, as it means they increase the size of your hand in addition to replacing themselves, greatly smoothing out the draw curve.

Treasonous Ogre
Generates a large amount of red mana quickly, allowing you to potentialy ramp towards a combo as early as turn 1 with a good enough hand. Aside from that, can additionally smooth out the mana curve when working without mana/cast generators.

Niv-Mizzet, Parun
Draw on spell is powerful enough already for him to be included, but the inclusion of Curiosity enabling him to draw the entire deck makes him an important inclusion.

Mind's Desire
Turns any storm count above 10 into a win. With the cost reducing effect of Mizzix the high cost is rarely a factor.

Gamble
Gamble is a solid handtutor who's only downside is the forced discard. As most of the time Gamble will be finding Underworld Breach in order to gain additional casts, the random discard is only a negative if it causes you to discard Underworld Breach itself. After finding Underworld Breach, the second Gamble can then find other useful cards such as Frantic Search, Bonus Round, Aetherflux Reservoir, or Mana Geyser to combo off that turn.

Arcane Denial
Counterspell that has the added benefit of drawing a card at the start of the next turn. In case of an extremely bad hand, can counter a weak spell from hand such as Gitaxian Probe, Rite of Flame, or Pact of Negation to draw 3 cards at the beginning of your next turn. This is bad during a combo, as the cards will not arrive until your next turn, but utilising it on an early turn can give much needed fuel to your combo. Aside from that, it can be either used aggressively in the early game in order to net the additional draw or saved later to protect the combo.

Firemind's Research
Firemind's Research is a reccuring draw spell that allows us to dump mana into cards at instant speed. It will occasionally help smooth out the combo, but is more useful leading up to it, where it may draw 2-4 cards for free before hand size hits critical mass.

Cantrips
All allow us to increase early game card quality and combo off late game with the card advantage they give. In order of power, Frantic Search, Brainstorm, Gitaxian Probe, Faithless Looting, Dig Through Time, Treasure Cruise, Ponder, Preordain, Magmatic Insight, Expressive Iteration, See the Truth, Impulse, Serum Visions, Reach Through Mists, Consider.

While Reach Through Mists on its own is worse than other 1mana cantrips, the extra benefit of being able to combo with Desperate Ritual is enough to pull it ahead of similar cantrips like Opt.

Wheel of Fortune
This deck will often run low on cards, and Wheel of Fortune can efficiently refill your hand while also disrupting tutors from other players. Can be played turn 1 with mana crypt to force all players to discard their good hands.

Timetwister
Same as Wheel of Fortune, with the added benefit of shuffling your graveyard into your library. This is one of the only methods to get back a force discarded Underworld Breach, albeit it does make it more difficult to find again.

Relic of Progenitus
Fills the roll of mandatory Graveyard Hate while also replacing itself in the event that Graveyard Hate is not applicable to the game you are in.
