With the Eldrazi having defeated the last planeswalker hiding in the United States, Dr. Moriarty completed her process of restoring Planet Earth - except the United States. She leaves the U. S. a wasteland because it betrayed the rest of the world just for power and profit.
With that, she decided to go back to the multiverse, tracking down the most serious damage the planeswalkers were doing lately and offering innocent survivors her medical aid. Her clones of Ephara and Oketra go with her.
While she is on the plane, she finds herself back among her oldest friends, spirits. She had not had as much traffic with them as she'd wanted after the original deck, and wanted to enjoy the reunion. But planeswalkers, seeing her as an enemy, made that impossible. Even with a force field to shelter herself and her patients, she could only stop the planeswalkers around from killing her and all around her by creating a clone of Zedruu the Greathearted with help from Oketra and Ephara.
Zedruu negotiated a strained ceasefire. The planeswalkers would be free to go after Dr. Moriarty if she leaves her forcefield zone. Within the forcefield, they are not to enter so she can finish treating the patients there.
This is when the spirits decide to intervene. They are capable of leaving the field and returning, but Dr. Moriarty and Ephara analyze this strategy and tell the spirits that they can do that a little bit, but it's better to stay safe and rely on healing and draw. The spirits disagree . . .
The spirits prepare fifteen spells that will allow them to temporarily possess the creatures the planeswalkers control and use these creatures against them. Traitorous Greed, Act of Treason, Bond of Passion, Harness by Force, Portent of Betrayal, Grab the Reins, Word of Seizing, Traitorous Instinct, Traitorous Blood, Shackles of Treachery, Malevolent Whispers, and Mass Mutiny, and new additions Lose Calm, Act of Treason, and Limits of Solidarity are the cards used to explain in magic terms what the spirits do.
Sensing the possibilities, Oketra provides a Liquimetal Coating, a Rambunctious Mutt, and a Sunblast Angel. She ends the roster of spells with a clone of Avacyn, Angel of Hope to make sure the forcefield spell is indestructible.
And her last trick is a new weapon. Basandra, Battle Seraph. Now no one can interfere with the spirits as they possess enemy creatures.
From here, Dr. Moriarty can treat planeswalker victims (that is, ordinary citizens and animals who have been harmed by the planeswalkers' endless fighting) while the spirits drift back and forth, and when they're ready, engage in temporary possession. All Dr. Moriarty has to do is wait until dawn for the second sun to rise.
