Elks are graceful and stupid beautiful. Why not elk? Waiting for my commander and a few pieces from the new hotness, Eldraine. Might go political as deck undergoes revision, but elk largely lack political instinct, so maybe not.
Edit: Oko seems to have taken the world by storm, resulting in elktober. I knew he was good stuff, but I had no idea we would see such a surge in fascination with the Cervus species out in the multiverse. Eldraine was never my prime motivation for wanting to do elk, but it sure did give me a few tools to work with. I didn't end up wanting to use Kenrith's Transformation or Unexplained Vision, despite the elkness. Overall, I'm happy with my choices, although I would have liked the mana base to be more natural (shocklands are just too hard to pass up when I need to fetch for the damn blue mana that never needs to be there). Approach is a nice alt win con when my hooves are not up to snuff, which I justified by... Bolas antlers? I just imagine all the elk would be transfixed. Very fun to play! Most pods tend to get confused or leave me alone, and get a kick out of the elk figurines I use for Oko targets. Definitely taking this on the road to various commander sections at GPs.
Hated to get rid of Garruk, Caller of Beasts. He would seem very much at home with the elk folk, though Vivien is there to take his place. Nissa was not as good as I figured she would be, maybe because the elk kept trying to eat her plant tokens. I kept Rubinia in, as she was originally meant to be the commander. Both her and Chulane are meant to be observers of the herd, but also protectors against the interference of the local jerky concern.
Edit round two:
"Tribal decks must have at least ten creatures, 60% of which must share a type to be considered tribal." OK, Edhrec. That made me trim the fat a bit, like getting rid of non-elk lookalikes such as Primalcrux and Elderwood Scion, and throw in fun related things like Kenrith's transformation and Unexplained Vision. Ajani felt like mentoring some elk, so he came along too.Edit round three:
I am loving this deck and plan to use it at a few upcoming Magic Fests; look for the chubby guy in the cardigan and elk tie! Most people seem to enjoy the elk figurines I use when Oko transforms their creatures, and the deck is actually halfway decent at control and politics. I mostly made it for fun and to showcase a neglected tribe, but it has some pep to it.Minor edit: How did I not know about Tribal Unity until now?! Ditched Elemental Bond for it, because my draw is already amazing without Nissa getting involved.
