DCI is a trademark of of Wizards of the Coast LLC.
This deck was made to see if I could create a successful deck using only gates as the lands. Since then, it's become one of my most successful decks ever, and a favorite among my play group.
While the initial strategy in construction was to defend using Gatekeepers until an eventual win from the activated ability of Maze's End, I began to notice several end-all triggers on the WUBRG menu. I decided not to deviate from the original plan, but to add in a few contingencies.
The second way this deck wins is via the Door to Nothingness. This win also requires 10 mana plus the card in question but is a little easier to manage given the flexibility of every land to provide two different colors.
The third way this deck wins is through Crackling Perimeter. Once you amass a defensive line via Hold the Gates and any combination of creatures, you can start zapping all your opponents for 1 life-per-gate, each turn.
The Fourth way this deck wins is by making Gateway Shade unblockable by attaching Way of the Thief onto it, then stomping the opponent. A strong defense will come naturally, as Hold the gates provides plenty enough stat boosts to your defenders.
The Fifth way this deck wins is by using Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker to cause your opponents to relinquish what must be the best defense ever, and then using his ultimate ability to make them sacrifice whatever is preventing you from using the other four strategies.I made a cart on TCGplayer.com just to see how much all 60 cards cost, and in an optimized cart, the Subtotal was $13.65. It goes up from there if you want them all Near Mint, but this qualifies as Budget.
