Viewing revision 38. There is a more recent version of this deck.
This is a BR deck build from the August 1997 Standard card pool (97 Worlds). It looks like an aggressive deck, but it functions more like a control deck because the majority of the cards are primarily for creature removal. However, most of them can also serve another purpose. Coercion, Drain Life, Earthquake, Nevinyrral's Disk, Nekrataal, and the burn can each do something else against decks like CounterPost and Stasis.
The primary targets for Coercion are Frenetic Efreet, Rainbow Efreet, and Kjeldoran Outpost.
Drain Life is there to feed larger Earthquakes in the same way that it can feed Necro.
Previously, this deck had problems against Winter Orb and Svend Geertsen's green deck. I added Lotus Vale and Lake of the Dead which, along with Mind Stone, allow it to continue working when the Orb is out. This works a lot better than trying to remove it.
Against Svend's deck, I try to Quake for 4 or 5 damage to make his Giant Growths useless.
Aku Djinn is included because the deck has so much removal that the drawback doesn't matter. I'm not worried about it getting Plowed because then I can use the extra 6 HP for another big Earthquake.
Sideboard:
Dystopia goes in vs Green or White
Knights and Djinns go in vs. White
Mana Flare can be thrown in against Winter Orb.
Harbinger of Night can be subbed in for various things. Against mono black, it can replace Nekrataal. Against Forsaken Wastes, it can replace Drain Life, as the decks using Forsaken Wastes also used a lot of weenies. It's also good vs. Frenetic Efreet.
If the opponent is using Control Magic or Desertion, I side in Harbinger and Wildfire Emissary so that the drawback is nastier.
