To play your deck at an official ("DCI-sanctioned") tournament you need a deck registration sheet. Here you can download such a sheet pre-filled with the cards in this deck!
Please note: This is not an official DCI service. So please always make extra sure that the sheet contains all the cards in your deck and fulfils all DCI requirements. If you notice anything wrong, please let us know. DCI is a trademark of of Wizards of the Coast LLC.
"Stax is a term used to describe a deck strategy that mostly relies on resource denial, taxing effects, disruption, and sacrifice enablers to potentially lock down opponents and make it difficult to cast spells, play creatures, attack, breath, sleep, and/or have any kind of reliable board state."
My intentions are to make a control heavy deck that 1st) suits my style of play and 2nd) is also (a little) fun to play against. Many years ago I've built a control-heavy merfolk-opposition deck and the first thing I ve noticed was that nobody wanted to play against it, especially in a group of 4-6 players. So this time there are no tokens for Smokestack or Opposition, no place for Stasis, Oppression and so on.
Strategy:
The main target is to create a lock system and control the mana base with cards like Winter Orb, Static Orb and Pendrell Mists. The plan is to turn Lazav, the Multifarious into the right creature for the actual board situation, and therefore are many helpful combinations included to give this deck a run. The commander is definitely the opponent's main target on my board so I've to do everything to protect him and keep him alive. For winning the game he transforms into Phage the Untouchable and Phyrexian Dreadnought for a deadly strike.
1.) Protection: Lazav becomes an Will-o'-the-Wisp, Invisible Stalker, Thalakos Scout, Thassa, God of the Sea... for beeing safe from destroy-effects. I've put in different types of creatures therefore, so I can choose between an indestructible ability or to bounce him back to my hand.
2.) Card adventage: Merfolk Looter, Jace's Archivist, Notion Thief filter your library and fill the graveyard with creature cards
3.) Assassins: Fatestitcher, Trickster Mage and Pili-Pala enable the mana lock; Waterfront Bouncer, Royal Assassin and Phyrexian Obliterator clean prefered targets.
4.) Tutors: Yes, they are needed. Different situations need different solutions, so classic cards like Buried Alive, Diabolic Tutor,... etc. are included.
Combinations:
1.) Invisible Stalker + Lazav, the Multifarious + Phage the Untouchable : Target opponent loses the game
2.) Grand Architect + Necrotic Ooze + Pili-Pala : Indefinite Mana and Temporal Adept returns every opponent's permanent back to their hands
3.) Fatestitcher / Trickster Mage + Winter Orb / Static Orb: Mana lock
4.) Jace's Archivist + Notion Thief : card draw
5.) Maybe: Lazav, the Multifarious + Phyrexian Dreadnought + Vector Asp : Killing with infect
Lazav works well if those (and/ or other) cards are in the graveyard, so he can turn himself into a combination piece. This shapeshifter-ability allows the deck to run very smoothly.
This is my version of Lazav, the Multifarious in a sabotage deck. I'm asking Stax because I like to:
