This is another look at a Thing in the Ice control deck. I have made a Jeskai version of this deck to look at the different strengths and weaknesses, be sure to check it out!
Grixis is in many ways what players currently consider the best control variant. It has cheap removal, hand disruption, and easy ways to dig through your deck to find the right answer. Even though all of these thing in the ice decks are essentially trying to play the same game, each color combination goes about it in different ways and plays matchups slightly differently.
Now I have to admit that I do not consider myself a control player (yet!), so the spell list I have created is subject to change. At a glance, I would say that this spell list is built to be extremely effective in the early game with some mid/late game kill spells in order to insure that awoken horror is able to finish the game without the opponent chump blocking. The weakness of this spell list is without establishing a strong presence with some good 1/2/3 turn spells, the individual strength of the spells are weak. To say it a different way- if our opponent is ahead, this particular combination of spells will find it hard to even the odds.
That being said, don't let me convince you that Grixis is not the right place for you- this list is extremely strong against midrange and control, pretty good against combo, maindeck spellskites make this deck pretty good against infect, burn, and boggles. The only matchups I think this deck would struggle against are decks that put a lot of creatures onto the field in a very short amount of time, or decks that have powerful planeswalkers- affinity, zoo, merfolk, tron, and nahiri control come to mind. This is where the sideboard comes in to make those better:
Anger of the Gods, Engineered Explosives, and more kill spells are best against merfolk and zoo. Negate, dreadbore, and ghost quarter are all good against tron, jund, and junk. Anger is very good against collected company lists. Ancestral visions and keranos are for games that you feel will go long, the extra spellskite is for burn, infect, and boggles.
