Haazda Marshal pigeon holes you into very narrow deckbuidling parameters. The two obvious decks are white weenie (go wide with creatures and tokens) or go Selesnya tokens (go wide with creatures and tokens). Not a ton of variety. I decided I needed to look at the card a bit deeper and see what else it brings to the table. The only other major part of the card is its creature types "Human" and "Soldier". I sized up making a humans deck and there were some decent build around cards, however the 1cmc creatures were much better in soldiers. The major deciding factor for the decks archetype is that Haazda Marshal generates "Soldier" tokens, meaning Radiant Destiny would not pump them in a humans deck. The following deck is my best attempt at utilizing the strengths of Haazda Marshal.
1cmc soldiers: (12)
a) Haazda Marshal
benefits from the going wide strategy.
should never be a 1/1 for long.
b) Goblin Banneret
*I like that it can mentor the other soldiers as it grows and is a mana sink once you run out of creatures to play.
c) Skymarcher Aspirant
*starts with 2 power, plus the flying can finish games in board stalls.
2cmc soldiers: (10)
a) Swiftblade Vindicator
*the decks nastiest threat if left unchecked
b) Boros Challenger
*adding it mostly for the mentor trigger, but also since 3 toughness will help it survive in combat over some other options.
c) Adanto Vanguard
*probably our best 2cmc soldier since it protects itself, however it doesn't play well with our mentor creatures as it triggers first.
3cmc soldiers: (6)
a) Tajic, Legion's Edge
while the mentor trigger is sweet (at 3 power), I believe it is the haste that makes Tajic so explosive in this deck as he gives us some powerful turn 3/4 swings as he enters the battlefield.
the non-combat protection is huge in a format full off red and Chainwhirler's.
b) Militia Bugler
*grabs every creature in the deck besides Venerated Loxodon and Tajic. (Even grabs Aurelia)
Enablers: (6)
a) Radiant Destiny
*the deck plays 28 soldiers to take full advantage of the anthem effect.
b) Venerated Loxodon
you can play the Loxodon as early as turn 3 in this deck to apply a ton of early pressure.
There is a neat trick that can be used with the vigilance creatures in the deck where you get to attack and in your second main phase still get to tap them for convoke.
c) Aurelia, Exemplar of Justice
I wanted to play something at the top of the curve as a finisher. I considered Ajani for counters and recursion, but a pumping flyer that evades a ton of the formats top removal is too powerful.
at 22 lands it will be hard to cast her some games, however she is more of a finisher then she is an on curve threat.
Removal: (6)
a) Demotion
it's cheap and clears a path for the deck to attack (all we are really looking for).
turns off the activated abilities of likely early turn format staples like Llanowar Elves, Lazav, and others.
b) Justice Strike
*it kills most of the major threats that the format has to offer
c) Response // Resurgence
Response can destroy the majority of the creatures in the format.
Resurgence gives the deck a tool to finish games in board stalls.
Mana Base: (22)
*simple 22 lands base with 16 white and 14 red sources. You should curve out without ever playing a land tapped.
Sideboard:
*Nothing fancy here:
Demotion- more fast evasion with upside.
Conclave Tribunal- sometimes you need a catch all, exile, or just removal for a huge thrreat.
Mentor of the Meek- versus control, like Bugler has so many cards to play off of.
Bounty Agent- whenever the removal is relevant
Remorseful Cleric- versus Golgari or Dimir graveyard decks.
Tocatli Honor Guard- the deck can side out Bugler and Loxodon and really make an opponents creatures be generic bodies. This is a great answer to a ton of creatures in this format.
Shalai, Voice of Plenty- great against all types of removal, however it is fantastic against Settle the Wreckage and red's direct damage as you cannot be targeted.
