I've been playing a boros deck that has been doing incredibly well online and I started wondering if the decks concept could be translated into other color pairings.

So here is what the boros deck does:
1) midrange flyers. (everything 4cmc or higher has flying)
2) 2/3 cmc creatures have first strike or other evasion
3) removal that exiles and is efficient
4) overall the deck curves well and opponents must waste removal on early creatures to survive, then they get overwhelmed by midrange flyers.

It is actually a pretty tried and true MTG standard strategy. I'd classify the deck as somewhere between tempo and midrange.

My first thought was to look into Dimir as a second option. Dimir offers Thief of Sanity and Doom Whisperer. Very powerful flyers that both have elements of card advantage worked in. My issue with Dimir was that there was no quality 4cmc flyer (Nightveil Predator is not a main deck card in this format). The idea of splashing red for Nicol Bolas became the clear option. Then I decided if I'm playing red then I'm uping the anti and playing Rekindling Phoenix. Phoenix is one of the key pieces in the boros deck, and works just as well here.

Now the deck has 14 3-5cmc flyers. That can really get the job done. So what next, try to get some first strike or evasive creatures for the 2cmc slot. Evasive proved to be a bit difficult, however first strike is not a problem:
Enter Dire Fleet Daredevil and Knight of Malice.

a) In the boros deck, Knight of Grace is a stud so it makes sense that Malice would fill the same position. The big difference is that it will not likely have 3 power as often and does not get a boost from History of Benalia.

b) So it turns out Dire Fleet Daredevil is the true 2cmc star. People avoid it sometimes because it is slow, but a 2 power first striker on turn 2 is just fine with me. In this format it trades and survives with so many creatures it is unreal. The etb trigger is the icing as it makes it even better as a top deck late. How often is a 2cmc creature a great top deck in standard.

c) As I looked more at my turn 2 options I looked hard at other creatures, but they were not ideal in my opinion. So I went with Thought Erasure. It is not the perfect fit in a tempo deck, but the goal of my 2cmc creatures in boros was to draw out removal. Thought Erasure can simply erase "cough" their removal. It can also just throw then off curve as I curve out and beat face.

The boros deck is very strong on turn 3. Like bonkers strong. The grixis build cannot offer me the same pure power, but what it can offer is utility.

a) Isareth, the Awakener is a nice insurance policy on a 3/3 body with deathtouch. I want to be aggressive and this is that. I have no trouble turning this sideways, even with an empty graveyard. However, with a creature or two in the yard this is nuts.

b) Midnight Reaper is nice protection for the decks creatures. The life loss can be scary (killing yourself is not fun), but if you play full on aggressive then a few life lost your way should not cost you games. I'd prefer to play incidental card draw in a deck like this in the form of a creature, so that I can have access to card advantage but not give up my aggression.

c) Hostage Taker is a pretty sweet utility card. It gives the deck additional exile removal, but leaves a body behind (perfect for a tempo-ish deck). Even if the opponent kills your Hostage Taker, it still served the purpose of stalling them a few turns. Much like Thief of Sanity, it is unconventional card advantage.

The rest of the deck is removal:

a) I'm playing Lava Coil because it is cheap exile removal. This is a necessity in this format, in my opinion. I would not be playing any deck that did not have consistent ways to exile creatures. Right now, I'm willing to give up instant speed for exile. I believe it is that important.

The sideboard plan is pretty simple:

a) Chart a Course is for grindy matchups or control.

b) Disdainful Stroke is for Golgari and any deck with Settle the Wreckage.

c) Duress is here over negate because I cannot be sitting back on counterspells, I'm playing too aggressive. Better to grab it early and go.

d) Moment of Craving is played over Shock because gaining 2 life is needed against aggro since the deck pays life often.

e) Nightveil Predator is a good substitution for games where Hostage Taker is a dud.

f) Plaguecrafter is a great card, but I'm not looking to go down a body. Only for emergencies.

g) Ritual of Soot is the panic button. Oh crap, they are too fast!

h) The Eldest Reborn plays well against midrange, too slow for the deck otherwise.

i) Cast Down is not unconditional removal, but it does answer a lot of problems for 2cmc.
