I have been trying out a few different things to build myself a new deck to play on MTGO. I was on my own build of boros flyers for a long time and the deck performed really well. The side effect is I grew a bit tired of playing the cards after a while. I am putting Lyra and Rekindling Phoenix on the shelf (at least for a little while).

I've taken a look at the top decks in the format right now and am not seeing any deck that jumps off the page as fun to play. I have seen plenty of cards I feel are worth playing, but I'm just not seeing a deck that I love. So I'm back to looking at building my own deck for now and see where it takes me. I have a few ideas, here is one of them.

My starting point:
a) Rip- discard effects. Grixis is full of powerful discard spells with upside. I'm going maybe too deep (cough...Burglar Rats), but I want to make my opponent uncomfortable at all times.

b) Steal- I'm not all in, say like a steal and sac deck (shout out to Dev at Strictly Better MTG who posted a cool steal n sac the other day), I would rather it be a feather in the cap type effect. What I mean is, after I have torn apart my opponents hand I then steal what remains. Hopefully the opponent chooses to keep their midrange creatures so we can take full advantage.

c) Destroy- Things will hit the board and they must be dealt with. The deck posts a solid removal package that takes care of pesky creatures that must be exiled, to midrange bombs, right up to big poppa pump himself Carnage Tyrant.
P.S. Tyrant is the real issue as we cannot steal him once he hits the board, so we have to have answers. We play enough discard that it will be hard for our opponent to still have him in hand by the time they can play it and we play six main board sac effects to help matters.

How the deck wins?

a) The deck wins by the sheer joy you have in making things as difficult and grinding for your opponent as possible. Seriously though, the deck is difficult to play against since the opponent has to throw away card after card all game long. You will likely win the war of attrition as you play so many two for one's.

b) You beat them to death with their threats. Thief of Sanity, Hostage Taker, Angrath, and The Eldest Reborn all allow you to turn the opponents biggest weapons against them.

c) You beat them to death with your own threats. The opponent must choose to discard something, and sometimes that choice is removal. If so, this deck plays enough midrange threats that you can win all on your own. Thief of Sanity and Bolas can fly over the top, while Angrath has a built in win-con clock as you tick up to ultimate (or just keep ticking up).

d) Flip Bolas. No joke on this one, Bolas will flip. You are tearing their hand apart to grind out games. They will not always have answers for our fearless leader.

When do things go horribly wrong?

a) Nullhide Ferox. Yup, that guy. If you see turn 1 forest then you may be in some trouble. The hope is you are holding a Thought Erasure instead of a Burglar Rats. A free turn 2 Ferox is a game you are probably not going to win. My personality though, I'd still have to stick to my guns and play the Rats in the face of uncertainty. I'm going to find out if they have it one way or another. If I play around it all game then I'm going to lose anyway, so I will lose playing my game or win for being bold.

b) Aggro is an issue. Not an automatic loss, but aggro is not ideal to see in game 1. Many of our creatures don't trade so well in combat for the casting cost, stealing a 2cmc creature is a poor investment, and our midgame discard is usually a mute point by that time as they may already be top-decking. A final point is that Experimental Frenzy is really not our friend (so you want me to discard a card eh lol).

My final Thoughts?

a) This deck is no world beater, that's for sure. It is however a ton of fun. You just need to adjust your expectations. I like to win more than I like to play fun cards. (This I have come to terms with somewhat recently and my MTG experience has been all the better for it). My guess is, I will play this deck for a few days and then either go back to kicking butt with boros or try out a stock Golgari build I find on the internet. A Carnage Tyrant is a Carnage Tyrant, whether I cast my own or yours lol.
