Today I'm taking a look into the best possible Zombie build for Pioneer. I have a few different lists in mind: Orzhov Drain Aggro, Reanimating Zombies, Zombie Token Horde, and Zombie Devotion.
This is the Orzhov Drain Aggro list:
Zombies
1) Diregraf Ghoul (2/2 body to start with)
2) Dread Wanderer (2 power that will have an opportunity to return later)
3) Corpse Knight (drain for every Zombie to come)
4) Wayward Servant (drain and gain)
5) Relentless Dead (the hard to block pest that keeps the game rolling late)
6) Metallic Mimic (Zombie at heart and gives the deck a little extra bulk)
7) Lord of the Accursed (Zombie lord with a built in wincon)
8) Death Baron (Zombie lord that is just short of Accursed)
9) Midnight Reaper (Much needed card draw without going off theme)
Utility
10) Dark Salvation (Can be one hell of a removal card, and even has late game upside)
11) Thoughtseize (we're playing black)
12) Liliana, Touched by Death (all-star that drains, gains, is removal, and reanimation all in one)
Lands
13) Mutavault (also a Zombie)
14) Castle Locthwain (bonus card draw)
15) Urborg (helps make Mutavault, Castle Locthwain, and Isolated Chapel better)
16) Concealed Courtyard (we are playing fast)
17) Isolated Chapel (10 lands that count as swamps is a little low, but it works most games on curve)
18) Caves of Koilos (we can pay the 1)
19) Swamp (Five is a low number for how black heavy the deck is, but I like the base overall)
Sideboard
20) Graveyard Marshall (when we expect grindy games it is a better card than Mimic)
21) Lifebane Zombie (when it is good it is the best card in the deck)
22) Murderous Rider (too slow for the main deck, but it is nice to have a Zombie that doubles as removal.
23) Graf Harvest (helps win the battle of the creatures)
24) Duress (When Dark Salvation doesn't cut it)
25) Doom Blade (kills a lot for 2cmc)
26) Leyline of the Void (shut down that nonsense)
Strategy:
1) The main way to play is to go balls to the wall aggro. Creatures get big and fast. Get out your lord effects and swing in.
2) Late game can move into wall up the board and drain your way to the finish line.
3) Don't forget about Mutavault. It can be a 3/3 or 4/4 attacker. Also, counts as a Zombie for Dark Salvation if you need an extra -1/-1.
4) Relentless Dead with either 2cmc orzhov Zombie on the field is an engine. Attack, force blocks, die, return itself + another Zombie and drain again.
Overview:
1) You can have some big swings early in the game.
2) The major strength to the deck is that it has a solid plan B, in that you can simply grind out or reanimate your way to a win using your drain creatures.
3) Access to Thoughtseize and Duress means that you can defend well against heavy removal decks or decks that need to compile specific pieces to win.
4) I feel this is a playable list and would definitely take it for a test run online.
