To play your deck at an official ("DCI-sanctioned") tournament you need a deck registration sheet. Here you can download such a sheet pre-filled with the cards in this deck!
Please note: This is not an official DCI service. So please always make extra sure that the sheet contains all the cards in your deck and fulfils all DCI requirements. If you notice anything wrong, please let us know. DCI is a trademark of of Wizards of the Coast LLC.
I'm not one for gimmick decks. So when I thought "I'm going to try to build a deck around Willbreaker" my first thought was it has to be at least somewhat competitive.
My initial instinct was to look for cards that trigger Willbreaker's ability. I looked at some tricks using artifacts or instants where i would deal 1 damage to their creature or target it with a spell that could double as useful to me. The deck was just feeling really janky. Kitchen table stuff. I decided that the spells that triggered the ability had to be powerful spells that just happened to trigger the ability. See the difference? Instead of playing something like Turn to Frog or a pump spell I looked at the most powerful spells in the format. So what did I find:
1) Dromoka's Command is the perfect choice for the deck. One of the best removal pieces in the format. With Willbreaker you can put the +1/+1 counter on their creature and target another creature with the fight mechanic. You are stealing at least one creature (possibly two) or stealing one and killing another.
2) Rishkar. An excellent creature on his own and a great ramper for this deck. With Willbreaker you can give the +1/+1 counters to the opponents creatures and steal them.
3) Elder Deep-Fiend. If you are playing this you are probably already doing alright as you pseudo Timewalk the opponent on their upkeep. Let's couple this with Willbreaker. You take their board, up to 4 creatures, and then they untap on your untap step. Game over. This also has the benefit that if you already have stolen a creature with Willbreaker then you can sac that creature to pay your emerge cost.
4) Tamiyo, Field Researcher. At first glance I overlooked using planeswalkers in the deck as I looked at other permanents to trigger Willbreaker. Once I started looking Chandra Pyromaster was my first thought. Then I came across Tamiyo and rembered I could target their creatures with the +1. I can steal two creatures and then if they deal combat damage I get to draw two cards. What a payoff.
So that is all the cards that trigger the ability of Willbreaker. Once I had this package put together I figured that was enough commitment to that. In order to get to the point of the game where any of this matters I need to survive the early stages. So I also wanted to protect Willbreaker--- Selfless Spirit and Spell Queller. Then I started thinking why reinvent the wheel. U/W Tempo standard had an amazing package of cards that were tempo and also protected creatures. Pretty simple to piece it all together.
