A budget (as in: each card must cost less than 5€) version of the king of midrange decks, Jund.

Obviously, Jund's plan being "play the best cards in the format", this budget version is nowhere near as competitive as the tiered one. However, it's still a fun deck to pilot, if you like to outgrind your opponent.

The core cards that need to be replaced from a stock Jund list, apart from the landbase, are:

  • 3x-4x Dark Confidant, with: Asylum Visitor. It doesn't draw as consistently as Bob, but it has 1 more thoughness and you lose only 1 life for each card drawn.
  • 4x Tarmogoyf, with: Sylvan Advocate. We don't play manlands (our manabase is already too tight), but it's still a good card; in the lategame, it's a 4/5 Vigilance creature for just 1G.
  • 2x Kolaghan's Command and - 4x Liliana of the Veil - 1x Liliana, the Last Hope: no card can replace a planeswalker, especially in the case of the best ones in the format. So, we try to replace the Lilianas and the 2 Kolaghan's Command with a group of cards that can widely, but not consistently, play their role: Blightning, which can be brutal on turn 3 or 4; Geth's Verdict, as additional removal and for dealing with those annoying Hexproof or Indestructible creatures; Liliana, Heretical Healer, nowhere as good as the other Lilianas, but still a planeswalker the opponent has to deal with (it could be replaced with additional discard, damage or draw spells, but I still have to try).

Update: thanks to UMA, now Maelstrom Pulse fits our budget. So +1 mainboard, for -1 Dreadbore, which goes to the sideboard.

As for the landbase, it should consistently give us a Black source on turn 1 (for discard and removal), a Green source by turn 2 (for our creatures) and a Red source by turn 4 (for Bloodbraid Elf). We can't add manlands as Treetop Village without also adding a lot more painlands, which I'd rather not.
UPDATE #2: -1 Blightning, -2 Rootbound Crag, -2 Dragonskull Summit, +1 Swamp, +2 Mountain, +2 Sulfurous Springs. The manabase is now more painful, but also more consistent. Rootbound Crags and Dragonskull Summits were not good enough, without a lot of Shocklands or basics.
UPDATE #3: -1 Sulfurous Springs, +1 Nihil Spellbomb (from the sideboard). 25 lands are just too much! In the sideboard +1 Damping Sphere.
UPDATE #4: More painful, but more consistent manabase. Now with 2 manlands! It's still difficult to have 2 black sources by turn 3 for Liliana, but with only 2 copies of her it's not a huge problem.
UPDATE #5: 2x Liliana's Triumph in the sideboard, as a straight upgrade over Geth's Verdict; +1 Vraska, Golgari Queen (-1 Broken Bond); +1 Terminate mainboard (-1 Nihil Spellbomb).

Sideboard is still being worked on. It will be very important in overcoming the narrowness of the group of cards we use to replace the Lilianas and Kolaghan's Command.

Critiques and suggestions are very welcome.
