This whole deck revolves around one aspect: if Protean Hulk dies you win. Varolz is just another way of making that happen. There are all kinds of ways to put Protean Hulk into your graveyard (like Entomb) and ways to bring it back (Animate Dead).

Protean Hulk combo:

To start the combo, Protean Hulk has to die. Varolz can sacrifice him, Go for the Throat can kill it, doesn't really matter how, he just has to die. Search for Body Snatcher and Viscera Seer. In response to Body Snatcher's enter the battlefield ability, sacrifice it to Viscera Seer (you now don't have to discard). Return Protean Hulk to the Battlefield. NOTE: If you control Varolz, the Scar-Striped, you don't need to grab Body Snatcher and Viscera Seer. Just go on to this next step. Sacrifice Protean Hulk to Viscera Seer/Varolz to get Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Walking Ballista. Sacrifice Walking Ballista to Viscera Seer/Varolz. It returns to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter due to Undying. Remove the counter to deal 1 damage to a player. Sacrifice it again, get +1/+1 counter, deal 1 damage... you get the idea, it's an infinite loop.

Ways to win on turn 3:

Turn 1: land, mana dork (Birds of Paradise, Elvish mystic, etc.)
Turn 2: land, Varolz, the Scar-Striped
Turn 3: land, cast Natural Order (sacrificing the mana dork) get Protean Hulk. Sacrifice it to Varolz to start the combo.
OR
Turn 3: land, cast Pattern of Rebirth on the mana dork, sacrifice it through Varolz to get Protean Hulk. Sacrifi... you know what I'm going to say.

In the future, I plan on adding in the convoluted Hermit Druid combo (described below). For now, I just need to figure out which cards to swap for the hermit druid pieces (including eliminating all basic lands).

Hermit Druid combo. To start the combo, you need to have Hermit Druid on the battlefield, and 3 mana (one green and two black).

Pay one green, activate Hermit Druid's ability. Because this deck doesn't use any basic lands, your entire library goes into the graveyard. Use 1 black mana to unearth Dregscape Zombie, and then another black mana to bring back Gravecrawler. Sacrifice Hermit Druid, Gravecrawler, and Dregscape Zombie to flashback Dread Return, bringing back Necrotic Ooze. The rest of this combo is at instant speed, so unless your opponent's have a card with split second (or they are really good at chaining removal spells) you've already won.

Use Wall of Root's ability to get 1 green mana. Spend it on Blighted Bat's ability to give Necrotic Ooze haste. Use any of the mana dorks abilities (let's say, Birds of Paradise) to get mana. Use Devoted Druid's ability to untap Necrotic Ooze, then use Channeler Initiate to remove the -1/-1 counter and get one mana of any color. You can keep using the abilities of Devoted Druid and Channeler Initiate to generate infinite mana. Walking Ballista allows you to add infinite +1/+1 counters, and then the other ability of Walking Ballista let's you shoot everyone to death.

This deck appears to be legal in EDH / Commander.
