Actually +1/+1 counters doesn't cause persist to turn your criatures into immortal ones, since they don't remove the -1/-1 counters placed on the first death. Melira, Sylvok Outcast can do the trick. ;D

Yes they do, a state-based effect provides that if there are +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters on the same card, they are removed in pairs until only one type remains.

+1/+1 counters do in fact remove -1/-1 counters, thus creating a loop of persisting creatures. So in other words, it works
