Commander Discussion / Re: Removing Enchantments
« il: Marzo 07, 2024, 03:24:33 pm »
All I know is that there is a card that brings back all enchantments from your graveyard back to play (maybe even for all players? Not sure)

I played against an almost all enchantment deck and didn’t know such a card existed. Dude was a new coworker so when I had a chance to kill him, left him and another guy with 1 life (the 4th and I had plenty) instead of killing him to be nice. Dude had like 10-15 enchantments in his GY that got there over the course of the game. He plays the card, brings them all back.

He won the game I think (I lost before him at least).

After that, I still don’t want to add any just enchantment removal to my deck. It would have been me chipping away at random enchantments that all did next to nothing until he got lucky enough to have a ton all at once. So I am not afraid of those (I should have finished the guy when I could, lesson learned).

I do fear Rain of Gore specifically, but if I see that, and someone didn’t slot it in for my deck specifically, I would just treat it as an amazing challenge and see if I can possibly deal with it or win around it.

All the newer enchantment creatures would have made me think twice, but all the best ones are gods with indesctructable so now I need an enchantment exiler…

turning my plains into forests.
How? The only things I can think of that do that only do so temporarily, and you could float your white mana in response, unless it's Thelonite Monk, which just does it one by one and should be pretty easy to deal with by way of a kill spell and it'd be pretty weird for them to only go after plains.

Wow, you are right!! It was Thelonite Monk, nice call! He knew I needed 2 white and only 1 black for my commander, and he also had something out for untapping, so used it like 3-4 times in the 3 turns it was out. He was saving it to forestify my next plains instead of starting on my swamps. Had he forestified them, he would have delayed if not locked out my Razaketh since it needs 3 black. I never got my commander out at all.

Edit: I thought it was funny I almost lost to a cleric instead if an elf. I also think I had cast Karlov while still had a plains, and he had around 8 counters, the sad thing was I couldn’t pop his abil to exile the Thelonite Monk because I had no white mana!

Added more sac outlets for consistency. Might put Sanguinary Priest back in later since he was fun. Light of Promise also might go back in since it did some heavy lifting in the past.

Added
- Vampiric Rites (got a few different foils, removed Light of Promise for now since it seemed to be a bit of a win more)
- Dockside Chef (once I realized he could sac himself I finally decided to try him, removed Sanguinary Priest for now)
- Spawning Pit (took out Minthara since she was just a bit too slow for me, this way I get a sac outlet and also can build some momentum like Minthara did)
- High Market (got a foil one and adding it back in, put Hall of Heliod's Generosity on the bench for now since I never seem to actually use the abil)
- Phyrexian Tower (finally pulled the trigger on the foil, swapped out a plains for it to get to 12/12 plains and swamps)

Almost lost a game against an elf deck that shut me out of white mana by turning my plains into forests. Never got to cast my commander, but got Razaketh out before he could turn my swamps into forests. Won the game the next turn.

Commander Discussion / Re: Need some ideas a commander deck.
« il: Dicembre 04, 2023, 03:02:05 am »
I looked through a list of commanders that meet your criteria that someone else filtered.

These are the cards I saw that I would consider for a deck that looked to have good value for their cost with effects I could see some easy strategies around.

Except Tsabo Tavoc that one is stupid but what a card, lol.

Commander Eesha
Vhati il-Dal
Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero
Zirilan of the Claw
Ertai the Corrupted
Seton, Krosan Protector
Gerrard Capashen
Sol%u2019kanar the Swamp King
Tsabo Tavoc
Asmira, Holy Avenger
Balthor the Stout

This looks like a lot of fun!

I collect purely for my one main commander deck, a white/black Liesa, Forgotten Archangel deck. I spend a bit of money here and there on it.

I think my most valuable gem is my foil ultimate masters Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. (I also have a foil Crypt Ghast to properly haunt it).

My favorite visual gems are my:
- Grand Abolisher (not foil, though I wish)
- Alhammarret’s Archive (foil)
- Shriekmaw (foil)

I love looking at these cards. They make me feel like gollum, haha. My precious…

General Magic / Re: Cards you refuse to use
« il: Settembre 09, 2023, 07:14:19 pm »
I refuse to play ugly cards.

At first, I struggled with even the “new” borders that came with 8th edition. But in the past few years that I have gotten back into mtg, there are now so many new prints and borders and extended arts and alternate arts, I just gave up on consistent format. Now I just use my personal taste to decide which card version I like most for my deck.

Gameplay-wise, I don’t really refuse anything, but I try very hard to steer away from mechanics that make the game longer in tedious ways, like tons of shuffling effects. I have a lot of +1/+1 counters in my deck, and even though I have a bunch of cool little dice for them, even they are sometimes a bit annoying to manage.

I hope I live long enough for augmented reality mtg games where a computer/AI auto manages these for us. Even better if you can upload your deck and have it fully managed (shuffling, life and damage, etc.) - we could stop having to play human computers and enjoy the decision making more.

General Magic / Re: Flying vs Ttrample
« il: Settembre 09, 2023, 06:26:33 pm »
I prefer flying in general as a passive on creatures. Strong on defense and forces opponents to have to defend it as well. A single, smaller creature with flying in early game can be REALLY annoying and people often don’t want to waste removal on it.

Trample I think of more as a wincon for an army of creatures because of all the green cards that give tons stats and trample until end of turn. Or trampling to hit with infect/toxic.

For me, its those big sorceries that give +X/+X and trample to all creatures that I fear the most, but that is because I have plenty of flying in my deck.

I think flying (or reach), or something else to defend against flying is more necessary to have in your deck though because it is REALLY hard to counter trample combos in my experience (at least for my white/black deck). I just messed up my deck when I tried to include cards that could specifically counter that stampede-style combo. Now I try to build up so much life I can still take the damage or control the opponents board so they don’t reach critical mass to pull off the win if they combo.

General Magic / Re: What do we think of Sieges?
« il: Settembre 09, 2023, 05:55:28 pm »
I am going to try Invasion of New Capennain my EDH deck. My commander is Liesa, so 4 flying damage can hopefully 1 shot this right away. The theme and the battle-in-a-battle sound fun.

All the posts in here make sense to me, upvoted!

Maybe we see this in another battle type like CleanBelwas was saying, but I am surprised the sieges don’t give the defending player some advantage while they have it alive. Maybe just not enough room for more text on the card.

General Magic / Re: How to make a better magic player
« il: Settembre 09, 2023, 05:08:58 pm »
She has to get out of the main focus of winning and losing. Think of it as playing a board game at home where nothing more is going to happen if you win or lose. Yes it is nice when you do win but drop that focus for the time being. Next since decks have been made for her she needs to create something to call her own. You both sit down find out what she likes to play, the play style, what is she going to enjoy. Then go to skryfall and look up and read the commanders to have her choose one she may like. Then with you aiding her while making suggestions use of course this website and build a commander deck. Just something she can enjoy that she knows is hers. Keep the focus on synergy stuff she wants in the deck. Then when she actually plays it on paper she could then ask these question upon any wins or loses. "Did the deck play out the way I wanted it to"? "Did I have fun playing this deck"?. Focusing on the deck itself and not whether or not it wins/loses will take off a lot of the pressure off. As time progresses she'll come to make other decks that will shift that focus. Then as she plays let her make her own decisions whether they be right/wrong because it is a complex game. So instead of trying to mirror you guys she needs to find her own way of playing.

I think this is the best reply in summary (upvoted!). There are too many rules and interactions to try and teach someone all of them before you start to play, let alone the tactics surrounding them.

I think you should help her build her own deck (you probably already have by now), and then she can work on improving it after each match, usually in one of these ways:
- You can change the deck to counter the specific deck you lost to, but won’t necessarily make it better in general. Good practice for deck tweaking, but sometimes the answer is just don’t play your deck against a deck which directly counters it.
- Make sure the deck is fun to play and if you don’t enjoy a card or combo (even if it is strong) swap it for something more fun.
- Create a goal besides winning for the next game and tweak the deck for that. Try to get your life total above 100, or pull off a specific combo. If playing against a better player/deck try to just survive for X turns or not go out first in multiplayer.

Lastly, game politics wise for multiplayer - help her identify the biggest threat in the room (to her deck or in general) and focus on that opponent. Don’t spread your aggression out - defend yourself and otherwise try to let the big dogs fight each other more than you.

General Magic / Re: [Modern] Redirection of damage from an activated ability
« il: Settembre 09, 2023, 04:24:01 pm »
My deck is a cleric deck, and I used to have this combo:

Shaman En-kor
Daru Spiritualist

With both out, Shaman can target itself for 0 infinitely, giving it infinite toughness.

I would then use abils that sacrifice and gain life based on creature toughness.

Shaman alone is useful for all sorts of crazy combos. First thing I think of for damage redirection.

All the en-Kor creatures I know,  which redirect:
Lancers en-Kor
Nomads en-Kor
Outrider en-Kor
Spirit en-Kor

Also these instants I know:
Kor Chant
Kor Dirge

Edit: It looks like Shaman is not legal in Modern, too bad.

Outrider and Kor Dirge are legal it would appear if you still like those.

I love this guy, he is in my Cleric deck with Liesa, Forgotten Archangel as my commander.

I get Orzhov Basilica first so I can stay a land behind but be on track with mana per turn. Usually get Reliquary Tower next, then Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth unless I am desperate for plains in which I will get Command Tower.

I also have Land Tax, but the thing I like about Weathered Wayfarer instead is that I can get Reliquary Tower at some point and avoid discarding my excess lands. I also have Crypt Ghast, so getting Urborgs rocks.

Commander Discussion / Re: Best Card In Your Deck
« il: Settembre 03, 2023, 04:43:04 am »
My deck is mostly Clerics with Liesa, Forgotten Archangel as its commander.

These cards always suit me very well:
- Children of Korlis
- Righteous Valkyrie
- Yawgmoth, Thran Physician
- Shriekmaw

Evoke lets me use Shriekmaw as a Terror each turn (since Liesa brings it back at the end of each turn).

With Children of Korlis, I can let huge damage through if I don’t want my blockers to die, then sac it and heal everything back (and it combos well with lots of my other cards).

Righteous Valkyrie is just insane value in my deck.

Yawgmoth, Thran Physician is also super high value and the main sac ability always feels stronger in game than when I read it outside of the game.

Someone else said Elenda, the Dusk Rose, bonus shout out to her - always fun and good in my deck as well.

Can you add my tutors to your ranks?

- Pyre of Heroes
- Shadow-Rite Priest
- Razaketh, the Foulblooded
- Weathered Wayfarer

My deck is mainly Clerics, so I have a tutor chain like this available:
Pyre of Heroes on a 1 cost Cleric to tutor Shadow-Rite priest > Shadow-Rite priest abil to tutor Razaketh, the Foulblooded > Raza abil to tutor anything else I want.

Weathered Wayfarer is also quite awesome, esp since I can get Orzhov Basilica first and keep my land count lower.
