General Magic / red madness engine?
« on: July 01, 2016, 03:15:10 am »
So I'm trying to find a heavy madness engine for red. Black has Oona's Prowler, green has Wild Mongrel, blue has Aquamoeba.. Where's the love for red?

Pauper GR Madness

Heya! So I'm brand new to Pauper, and have been experimenting with different color combination Madness homebrews. I think so far I like green and red the most- this is what I've got right now. Any suggestions, particularly for sideboard/utility, would be very much appreciated :)

Rakdos Madness

An attempt at integrating Rakdos with Madness! Uses heavy upkeep-based draw creatures such as bloodgift demon and sin prodder (which can trick out favorable damage trades to activate rakdos, lord of riots) for multiple draws, while discard effects such as oona's prowler and call the bloodline allow easy madness outlets AND keeping Dread Slag intact despite the heavy draws which are its typical bane. Input much appreciated, I've made this deck attempt a couple times and it didn't work out well for various reasons, but this one I put together today and has been testing well thus far :)

Hellbent!

Input appreciated! This is my (budgetable) attempt at Hellbent- I've made a couple halfhearted attempts before but this one, I think, flows much better. Dread Slag and Gathan Raiders (which helps achieve hellbent) are the heavy hitters here, while Jagged Poppet and Rakdos Augermage help to achieve hellbent and control your opponent's hand at the same time(rakdos augermage being especially nasty when your own hand is empty), Duress for removing your opponent's removal and Seal in Blood to bide its time without needing to stay in your hand- I've used it on Poppet in a couple games after no blockers were declared to surprise-hellbent myself and discard my opponent's hand.

Input appreciated, thank you friends :)

Wither is FUN!

Uses -1/-1 counters- through wither and effects such as scar and blowfly infestation - as a source for controlling your opponent, through cards such as kulrath knight, crumbling ashes, and necroskitter.

Severe Masochism!

This deck is all about taking the cards with such horrific drawbacks that most folks won't touch em with a ten foot pole.. and making them work :) Not for competitive play, but a fun deck capable of winning nonetheless!

Moto, I played around on untap with hellbent decks for a while but couldn't get them to stop feeling clunky, but this is what I've come up with instead- it's been a blast to play so far haha :)

Thoughts would be appreciated, for a while I was running Flings to pair with Abyssal Persecutor- and while early on it did amazingly, in later games it became more of a dead draw than anything, often being discarded through sire of insanity because I wasn't ready to ditch my creatures at the time. I'm thinking I may up the number of Blood Speakers, as they're tutoring ability for Eater of Hope is pretty great- speaking of, I'd like to find a cheaper sacrifice outlet for abyssal persecutors than eater, as its priciness doesn't really flow with the deck!

General Magic / Legendary creature question
« on: May 27, 2016, 06:40:23 am »
Hey there! So, I have a question about the legendary creature rule. When do you have to send a creature to the graveyard, if two are in play? This is about kolaghan, the storm's fury .

IE, say I have one kolaghan out at the start of my turn. Can I play a second kolaghan for its dash cost, attack with both, and then sac the second? I guess I'm asking whether they just sac at end step.

If not, when I cast a second kolaghan, will it still trigger dragon tempest?

Thanks!

General Magic / Pros of mtgo?
« on: May 26, 2016, 12:46:45 pm »
So I got into magic about a year ago, with a bunch of folks I work with. We've mostly learned the rules ourselves, and suffice to say in our current situation we're the only people we can play magic with without a language barrier getting in the way. I'll be going home in five or six months, back to small-town life, and while I know there's at least one magic group out there, I have no clue how active it is, and in general magic might not be feasible. I've got a vague plan to sell all my cards except for a few sentimental/keeper decks, and convert to MTGO. What I'd like to know is.. what's it like, is it worth it?

In my head, I'm thinking cards are cheaper on a card-per-card basis, AND, please PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, it sounds like if I buy a card once, I can use it as many times in a deck/in as many decks as I want.(i.e. instead of having to buy 4 Arlinn Kords at what, ten bucks apiece, from what it sounds like I could buy one arlinn cord for roughly ten bucks and be able to use four in deck A, four in deck B, etc, saving plenty of money.) Also I'd imagine that you can play games on MTGO any day, any hour of the day, and that there's always folks available.

That's really all I know about it. Just grapevine talk, really. Can anyone tell me where I may be wrong, give some pros and cons, just general stuff to know if I'm interested in converting from paper to mtgo? I'm not super interested in tournaments, etc- all of us here play with decks we made ourselves, we don't really like folks with that strict play-to-win attitude that brings full burn decks, full counter decks, two turn infinite combos, and in general, decks people found on the internet instead of building themselves, something I'm getting a taste of on https://untap.in/ . I realize those will be found online as well as in paper, but I would imagine that you'd find more of those "win at the cost of fun" decks in paper tournies/FNM where there are fat packs or whatever riding on the outcome.

Like I said I've only played magic in a very select pool of friends, and on an anything-goes website where folks play five hundred dollar decks they all insist they own then are surprised when I mention they haven't played a single card worth less than twenty bucks in the last four turns. :P

Please, send me some thoughts :)

After much testing, this is the best iteration of my Avaricious Dragon deck thus far. Scary early damage :)

Thoughts/suggestions?

Deck Reviews / Modern Manifest

Modern Manifest

So, I've enjoyed playing my manifest deck for quite some time now, but recently decided to give it a bit of an overhall and make it modern legal. Before, it abused Mirari's Wake and pretty much ate face, but I recently traded for Prophet of Kruphix and Chromanticore. I took mirari's wake out of my deck last night, chucked them in, switched around quite a few other cards, and was stunned at the Prophet's playability in this deck. Above is what I'd like to change it to; all the new cards I want are cheap and I'll probably buy them tonight, but what do you guys think? Do you have any suggestions? Below is the previous iteration of the manifest deck.

aand, below are a bunch of strategies I use to eat face. I really do love this deck, I've been tweaking it for ages alongside my other decks :)

Oh yeah, I know the lands look like a mess, but dang, rare lands are expensive. It's extremely rare for mana to be an issue in this deck, it's primarily green and white and that splash of blue/red/black is EXTREMELY easy and fast to come by :)

This Whisperwood deck is about manifesting lots of creatures quickly through whisperwood elementals. This generates lots of creatures(or enchantments which can be bounced back with temur sabertooth ), all of which can be flipped up at any time, giving you your creatures when you need them most on anyone's turn, and triggering lifegain through mastery of the unseen, particularly late game when you have lots of creatures and multiple mastery of the unseen on the field.

Golden rule for this deck is to never use a noncreature when you can use a creature to achieve the same effect. Examples: enlightened ascetic, hidden dragonslayer.

Prophet of kruphix is amazing in this deck. Mana is never wasted; manifested creatures need flipping, multiples of 2mana should be saved for emergency bouncebacks with temur sabertooth, and at the end of each turn, excess mana can be spent manifesting more creatures via mastery of the unseen. A second manifested Prophet is handy to keep around, as it can be flipped up if your first prophet attracts removal.

zhur-taa ancient: Okay, I get why other people rate this card so low. But other people don't have flash through prophet of kruphix or bounceback through temur sabertooth :) pay 2mana with 1land at the end of turn to return this to hand and prevent opponents from gaining advantage. Lands untap, play this at end of opponent's turn when (s)he is tapped out, enjoy the extra mana, rinse and repeat. Being flashed in this way essentially gives you a 7/5 with haste for your next combat phase, which is pretty nice too.

Odric, Lunarch Marshal: Synergizes nicely with chromanticore and temur sabertooth. Prior to combat, bounce a cheap creature(hidden dragonslayer, rattleclaw mystic, enlightened ascetic are excellent choices for re-use) to give your side blanket indestructable.

Sideboard options:

Torrent Elemental with Thousand Winds. I've used this combo multiple times to wipe my opponent's field, leaving them wide open to attack on the next turn. Come at me, token decks.

Silent Arbiter with Elder of Laurels: Silent arbiter WILL make people angry at you! I don't even play with it in my shop anymore because its control is so powerful it kept making wins feel free. Keep it out on your opponent's turn, bounce it back with temur sabertooth before combat on your turn, attack with all your creatures, play it immediately after combat ends to enjoy the benefit while eliminating the downside. Alternatively, if you have plenty of creatures out, keep silent arbiter on the field, and pump a creature with trample and, if you like, indestructible, as many times as you can with elder of laurels. Late game when you have plenty of manifests out, you'll get 10/10 counters(or more) per four mana spent.

Speedy Dragons

So, the last cards I need for this are in the mail, but I've been tweaking and tweaking and I like the draws I'm getting. This deck is all about getting inexpensive(4drop baseline) yet powerful dragons that synergize together out quickly, and to do hefty damage with a low buildup time- while not leaving yourself open to early attacks.

Synergy breakdown:

Avaricious Dragon: The bread and butter of the deck. The idea is to get these out as quickly as possible, as this deck's mana curb allows you to cast pretty much everything as it comes into your hand. Early game focus should be getting your 1drops and dragons, most notably Rakdos Pit Dragon, on the field and immediately playing Avaricious Dragon, even if it takes losing a few creatures. The deck runs quickly enough that anything you lose should be found quickly- or returned to your hand via Haven of the Spirit Dragon.

Rakdos Pit Dragon: This will really come into its own when it's paired with Avaricious. Primary mana dump when you get inexpensive draws.

Thunderbreak Regent: Makes it costly for your opponents to remove your dragons, particularly when there are multiple Regents on the field at once.

Slumbering Dragon: This serves so many excellent purposes! I feel like if my opponent has removal in his hand, he's going to HAVE to spend it on slumbering dragon, or risk it waking up as he's attacking. Best part is, this removal magnet only takes 1 mana away from you. It'll also be a game-maker when going against aggro decks if it's drawn in the starting hand. I like how even once it's awake, counters don't stop, they just continue to stack up. Yup, this'll see plenty of removal :) Later in the game, when your Dragon Tempests are out, this will pretty much serve as a 1drop burn spell on crack, the actual dragon itself just being the cherry on top.

Flamewake Phoenix - A prime candidate for discard, be it through Insolent Neonate or Avaricious Dragon! If it's discarded be Insolent Neonate before the combat phase begins, it can be reanimated for 1mana, tapped and attacking, the same turn(assuming any of your dragons are out). Each one is a free(well, 1drop) 2/2 flier that can be used over and over again each combat phase!
Insolent Neonate: I had Tormenting Voice in this deck to begin with, but found myself either wasting it or being forced to discard non-madness/phoenix cards when it was available. Insolent Neonate, however, can be tossed out for 1mana and saved for a more opportune moment- or just used as a 1/1 menace.

Dragonlord's Servant - pure mana ramp! Two of these out there, and dragons become 2drops, ensuring you can play them as they enter the battlefield and leaving more mana to dump into Rakdos Pit Dragon.

Dragonmaster Outcast - An obvious choice! Best to be saved until you either have 6 lands out, or are about to cast an Avaricious Dragon. Pairs excellently with Dragon Tempest.

Avaricious Dragon madness deck

Uses Avaricious Dragon and Asylum Visitor, among other one-time cards, to give heavy draws, and Avaricious Dragon among other one-time cards to trigger madness through discard.
