Oh good, you brought up Crawlspace, which is good for explaining how combating the meta works.
Crawlspace is super good against decks that try to attack with many creatures in one turn. However, it is absolutely useless against decks that only attack with one creature (Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder, Zurgo Helmsmasher) and decks that don't win through attacking (Azami, Lady of Scrolls, Teferi, Temporal Archmage).
In my examples i was only using the most common plays with it however its in all of my combo mill decks because i need my stuff to survive to my next turn to go off and thats the games where it hands down wins because i can play my combo pieces in the end phase before my turn.
When you try to tech against your meta, you need to asses the best cards to beat your meta. If you're facing down decks like Azami, Teferi, and Yidris, it would be better to use artifact-hate like Null Rod, Root Maze, and Stony Silence. If you don't tech against these decks, you will lose... often.
A similar situation applies to Vedalken Orrery here. If the people you play with aren't teching against artifacts (SIDE NOTE: every commander deck should have at least 3 forms of artifact removal) then you are bound to win the turn after you play Vedalken Orrery.
Speaking of which, how do you do that? The examples you gave in the first post show that it's good, but none of those actions are game-winning.
