EDH: Kaalia of the Vast, advice required
« on: February 05, 2016, 03:56:26 am »
Everyone who has reviewed it says "it needs more removal" so what else can I do?

Currently I am a bit heavy on creatures, with 37, but I also have 37 lands.

I just don't know what to take out or replace it with.

Thank you for your assistance!!

I know this may not be very specific but I'm going to give you a few spots to search as far as card choices go: [Ravnica] The Rakdos and Boros guilds, [Innistrad] Angels, and demons of the above used colors, [Tarkir] Mardu spells that deal damage. It's a strange combination of worlds and groups but every place has something that will improve the overall quality of the deck.  Some creatures that have enter the battlefield effects, or just are high drop creatures can be played for cheap as long as your commander is in play. Just make sure your commander either has first strike, double strike, indestructible, hexproof and/or regenerate. This way as it's in and out of combat your not losing your leader at vital times.

Hi,

I will reply the same answer as in an other topic:

To my mind, Kalia should be a light deck with some overkill angels, dragons and demons. (like Master of Cruelties or Iona, Shield of Emeria)
Otherwise you risk to face an opening hand with too many high cost cards.
So, you want to find these cards when you need them with tutor cards like Demonic Tutor, or draw cards.

The deck thus lose some funny splashy things but you get a more subtile one where you can add some removals or utility cards, especially if you play 1 VS 1.
If not, you can indeed add some bigger cards to face multiple opponents.

I would say that 15 creatures are enough in this type of deck. (and your average mana cost should be between 3,5 and 4, depending on multiplayer or not)
The aim in Magic is not only to make your plays but also to prevent the opponent to make his, that's why you need a versatile deck (with the black colour it's easier :) )

I have the same opinion as user AliasGreg, Kaalia has to be versatile and able to answer threats in your meta. I've been playing her from more than an year now and every time I go multiplayer with her is the same thing. Blood and fire. This kind of thing made me put some defense line as spot discard (which can be replaced by reanimate) to deal with highly permissive opponents and stuff like Grand Abolisher and Defense Grid will do the magic.

You have a lot of creatures, but as AliasGreg put it, it may provide you with a hand unplayable due to its average cost. Also, Kaalia have to go to field and swing in the same turn, since it's highly unlikely she'll see another dawn after an entire row. That's why you've put some haste enablers I assume. This said, when she swings you must have a creature who will have a great impact, changing the board state. I recommend big bosses like Rakdos the Defiler.
