> Notes

Why is this deck for RA?

  1. It's burns so good
  2. It's perfect if you can handle/enjoy math puzzles and can pay attention to damage sources
  3. It kicks ass

Deck Notes:

  • To win, this deck burns. Consider Descent into Avernus. This card is going to start doing a lot of damage really quickly, and with all that treasure you're going to be able to get Solphim, Mayhem Dominus out for sure, and even recast it with the commander tax if needed, so Descent into Avernus will be doing double damage to opponents. The "slow burn" cards are similar, if slower, and they add up with the spells that reset them every turn. This deck doesn't require the commander to function, which is great, but it functions (shocker) exactly twice as well with the commander on the battlefield. I would recommend not casting the commander until you have 5 mana. That way, if needed, you can activate its ability at instant speed (along with paying 4 life and discarding 2 cards) to make it indestructible.
  • Your biggest weakness to be aware of is that you have very few creatures. Solphim can obviously become an indestructible blocker, but it's still a weakness. You can play around this by coercing other players into not attacking you/punishing them if they try, but you can also just take it on the chin knowing that they'll all keep burning whether they attack you or not. And you've got bombs to go with your flames. If they're burned down to 20 life, Price of Progress can realistically win on the spot for you, especially if Solphim is on the battlefield. So let them swing at you. Winning at 1 life is the same as winning at 20 and all that.
  • Other versions of the deck: there are many more options for burn decks than I used to believe. This deck used to have Toralf, God of Fury as the commander. That basically meant that you would win if Toralf was on the battlefield and you could cast a bomb like Blasphemous Act, but you would do pretty much nothing otherwise. You'd win in one turn or you'd sit and watch 3 other players play without you. It's funny when it pops off, but it's really not as fun for you or for the table. Toralf works better in the 99 I think, but you could switch back to it if you want (although it works better when the deck is built around it more). However, you do have some other interesting alternate commander options. Imodane, the Pyrohammer is my first choice. Imodane would be pretty interesting, it would fit the theme, and it's probably the most functional with the deck as-is, although it would be best to shift the deck specifically to more valuable anti-creature spells (careds like Flame Slash and Shivan Meteor). The last version uses either Birgi, God of Storytelling (which isn't currently in the deck) or Krark, the Thumbless as the commander. You'd probably need to change the deck quite a bit to lean more heavily on Guttersnipe cards and lots of cheap instants and sorceries to make this work. It would probably end up much more solitary though, and less like a real burn deck since burn would just be the side effect of you casting 40 versions of Crash Through while you rely on the passives of Birgi and/or Krark, the Thumbless. Krark at least have some randomness in it. All in all, I think Solphim is the best spirit commander for Burn, with Imodane as a strong second, but Solphim doubles the effectiveness of your deck without putting all your eggs in one basket. For example, Bubble Matrix would basically beat the Imodane deck by itself. Solphim can persist.
