Araumi of the Dead Tide is a deck which I have found to be very fun and effective at interacting with the board and staying relevant, but difficult to win with. Araumi seeks to capitalize on ETB effects in conjunction with her encore effect, which should be done carefully. Because less opponents means less triggers from the encore, Araumi is least powerful in a 1v1 situation. Some rule changes to phasing helps Araumi keep her board state with cards like Teferi's Veil or Sundial of the Infinite, which cause our encore tokens to never be sacrificed like they are "supposed to". If you can keep a board state with your tokens, victory will be much closer to hand than encoring for a single copy...
Because Araumi's ability requires you to exile a card per opponent in tandem with selecting an encore target, there are no looter style effects in this deck, only self-mill. This makes for a less consistent deck - some players may dislike this, others may like it. I feel it adds replayability to the deck that it never quite plays out the same thanks to this element of chance. While the raw self-milling may be chaotic, there is selective filtering through a variety of other spells as well.
A normal gameplan follows this flow generally:
Play Araumi early - she is never threatening enough for people to care about, and because she does not have haste you cannot play her the turn you have threats in the graveyard. Araumi is also quite difficult to deal with if you can put some kind of protection on her, as the encore isn't a casting trigger. You need a Stifle effect to stop the encore itself.
Mill yourself by whatever means, and see what you get; use cards like thirst for discovery or unfulfilled desires to selectively put threats into the graveyard at instant speed when you are ready to encore them the next turn, which is hopefully your turn. Use dimir countermagic to keep the board state, cause havoc, kill all your opponents at once or carefully keep your encore tokens around to defeat one after the other in short order.
My deck didn't end up deviating from the norm in any major ways. It is pretty standard amongst Araumi decks with a few pet cards that I always use, like Vanishing or Wizard's Retort to keep my commander around.
I did not include any untap shenanigans as a few Araumi decks do. The two situations I find myself when things are going well have been the following: I encore something big on curve, and that's where my mana goes for that turn, or I encore for something with a little extra mana around so I can respond to things with a counterspell. I have never been in the situation where I have enough mana and encore targets to justify two activations at once. I didn't make any infinite mana combos either, so the deck was simply never built to do that. There are too few synergies for me to justify putting a thousand-year elixir in the deck.
The encore targets are pretty devastating on their own, I don't feel that they need any more power. It's up to you whether this feels underpowered, slow, fair, or fun for your pod.
There's a little bit of recursion in the deck, but not much. I've been getting used to throwing cards in the graveyard that I wanted to play.
There's a lot of good synergies sitting around in the deck that make piloting the deck satisfying.
Once we have encore tokens, they don't become sacrificed until the end of the turn. We have a little time to make the most of them. Altar of dementia helps us mill ourselves using our tokens, keeping the graveyard full with targets. Victimize is another choice, as is Dread Return. Sundial of the Infinite ends the turn before the beginning of the next end step occurs, so our tokens stay around as threats. Teferi's Veil saves the tokens in a similar manner.
Panharmonicon makes the Gray Merchant of Asphodel into a 42 damage encore to kill the table. Mystic Reflection allows some interesting flexibility for what we want to have enter the battlefield with our encore ability, or to stop an opponent from making a key creature.
Similarly, casting a Rite of Replication on the merchant will kill everyone. The Rite of Replication onto any encore target gets pretty crazy and can be considered a win-con.
If our graveyard gets REALLY BIG from a mirror-mad phantasm, perhaps we have the luck to Wake the Dead or cast a Living Death, which will probably do some good damage off of the Gray Merchant.
The Soldevi Adnate is an interesting old card that we can make use of. This allows us to let an encore target fuel its own encore cost, or sacrifice an encore token to fuel something else.
Don't overlook that Araumi is a Wizard... allow me to introduce you to Wizard's Retort.
Tell your pod to let you use Graveyard Busybody in your deck... and also let it cost 2 less.
This deck really consistently "does its thing" and is fun to play, so I don't even care about winning. It's one of my favorite decks. I think there's a good mix of everything here as it stands. Enjoy looking around and finding which big encore targets you want to rule the world with. Burning-Rune Demon seems like a good one, but complicated, and I'm a simple man. I have a Ghalta deck.
Dictate of Erebos or Grave Pact are strong choices here I would imagine.
Panharmonicon + Gray Merchant of Asphodel board kill.
Put nine creatures into play under your control from an encored Sepulchral Primordial.
Panharmonicon + Agent of Treachery.
Get them with the Archfiend of Despair.
If you have it in your build, use the Mirror-Mad Phantasm and then Living Death it all together.
Commission altered art for Araumi to have her surfing on a skeleton board.
Commission altered art for Araumi to be in a sexy beach bikini.
Because dragon shield sleeves often come with 102 sleeves, and I won't tell my friends I have two extra cards if you don't.
