"Oloro is able to manipulate the forces of life and death. He believes to be in possession of the secret to eternal life and, as such, guards it jealously on his remote, mist-shrouded island. Oloro's location is sought both by thieves and mystics: some of them seek to steal his possessions, while others seek to learn his secrets.
Oloro tolerates the companionship of only a few select individuals: those who can help him in his quest for knowledge. Some say he is older than time itself and wiser than all the great minds in the illustrious academies of learning. Until now, Oloro has managed to maintain an uneasy balance between the darkness and the light, but any threat to his carefully guarded secrets could force him into a quest for merciless domination."
Oloro commands this Esper deck with the goal of eternal life.
How do we accomplish this? Well, with Lethal Vapors we can skip an arbitrary amount of turns and with Teferi's Protection we can phase out during those skipped turns, rendering us essentially invulnerable. There are some exceptions, more on those later.
The full Lethal Vapors combo requires you to deny opponents the opportunity to skip the same amount of turns, we can do this by using Grand Abolisher (opponents can't activate LP), Wipe Away (hold priority, bounce LP once you've activated it sufficiently) or Tithe Taker (unless opponents have access to infinite mana, they can't skip as many turns as you.)
There's also the option of sacrificing LP as a cost (for example Claws of Gix, Final Payment) while holding priority after using LP enough times.
You could run more win conditions but for flavour sake I've decided to only go for this one, decide which ones you want to run and adapt the deck accordingly. I've also decided to run this deck tutor-less, obviously if you run demonic tutor / enlightened tutor / vampiric tutor etc you can assemble the combo a lot faster but I've decided not to, run them if you wish. On that note I've omitted Rhystic Study, Smothering Tithe and Mystic Remora, include those as well if you'd like.
The deck also runs a lifegain theme as it synergizes with Oloro as well as some pillow-fort cards like Ghostly Prison, Propaganda etc. Sun Droplet acts as a bit of a deterrent as opponents know you can draw with it.
If combo pieces are forcibly discarded / milled we have Elixir of Immortality and Hall of Heliod's Generosity to recur them. We also have Sevinne's Reclamation for other permanents. A pet card I'd like to mention is Mimic Vat, it can stop creature-graveyard loops or just act as repeatable value with cards like Notion Thief, Mangara of Corondor (if he dies, not if he's exiled) and Witch of the Moors.
The manabase is a bit slow as I've tried to keep the deck budgety (with the exception of Teferi's Protection) but the tapped lifegain lands are an upside in the deck so I think it's fine. The deck also doesn't run a lot of counterspells as we want to tap a lot to pay when we gain life in order to draw cards.
Okay so we're phased out and are skipping turns for a long time, can we still lose? The answer is yes, in a few ways. "I win" cards like Thassa's Oracle still beats us and a combination of Damage can't be Prevented and commander damage still beats Teferi's Protection, while our life total can't change Commander Damage is still counted, assuming damage can't be prevented. It's a bit convoluted.
Opponents can also prevent themselves from milling out until our near-infinite skipped turns are up with cards like Underrealm Lich or Blue Sun's Zenith. At that point the game resumes.
I would recommend briefing your playgroup that you're running a strange combo as people can react negatively to non-deterministic win conditions.
If you have any questions / suggestions, let me know!
phase peace out
