The goal of this deck is not really to win. ; The goal is to level the playing field - The Equalizer.
It was created to level the playing field between optimized decks and newer/precon decks.
It's meant to take the focus away from the newer weaker decks while keeping in check the more abusive mechanics.
Depending on who is the underdog, You might or might not play certain cards and no one will be any wiser.
If you play fair and low power decks, this deck is a slight hindrance at best.
Its staxxy, quite a few hatebears, but the goal here is not to shut everyone down, just to make certain opponents work harder to win.
What I really wanted to impede :
Fast mana : Main reason why some decks explode out of the gate is fast mana artifacts or steady ramping. I shut this down with a lot of artifact hate and a lot of tutoring denial. Slows the game to a pace everyone can keep.
Tutors : I believe that with the exception of certain intricate combo decks, tutors are a plague in general. It steers away players from building a solid consistent deck with many answers instead of having a bunch of catch all cards that will allow to always have an answer even if the deck is poorly designed. Also, newer player don't have access to affordable tutors so I wanted to block tutoring as much as possible (except for me ;) )
Cancerous mechanics : Storm, cascade, "without paying its mana cost". Nothing is free in life. I've put quite a few pieces to hinder this. Maybe not as much as I wanted since I didn't go blue in this deck (I love you Lavinia - wink)
Infinites : I tried to hinder these by blocking the "infinite hasty army" as much as possible with tapped creatures and by upping the cmc cost with damping sphere. Blocking also infinite etb's with a few cards.
Experience and infect : A piece or two to stop this.
Graveyards : Looking at you T1 entomb. A few piece to hinder this strategy. A few metas don't keep GYs in check, this deck will keep watch.
Land destruction loops : Hi Tomik ;)
Wheel abuse : 1 or 2 cards
Extra turns... : This deck cant shut down this strategy completely but 1 spell per turn seriously limits what extra turns can do. Gaddock is the only card that truly addresses this.
The reanimation package makes it hard to shut down this deck definitely. Shalai+ Gaddock makes it hard to shut it all at once.
What I didnt put in : Forcing sorcery speed : Grand abolisher, Dromoka type cards
I wanted the game to stay interactive. The goal isn't to stop people from playing but make it harder for the player who can't understand or will not take time to have a rule 0 talk. ;)
Missing :
Might switch Erebos for tainted remedy as an answer to life gain strategies. Erebos would be easy to tutor (already in), hard to deal with with bonus card draw. Tainted remedy is more punishing and lower on curve. When no one has a non-combat way to take out a player, these decks can take the win with a bit too much ease so I need at least one answer.
A bit more non-etb artifact/enchant removal.
Screw you, landlord! : Locked a player using Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger out of the game with Damping sphere.
Not as bad as it seems : A player recognized that the deck made the game interesting.
Rooting for the underdog : The deck allowed a casual deck to beat an optimized+ deck
C-c-c-combo breaker! : shut down a combo deck at least 3 turns
Rest in peace : shut down a reanimator deck at least 3 turns
Sit down, Be humble : Shut down an etb deck at least 3 turns
Fair weather : Shut down a storm/cascade deck at least 3 turns
Death to the king : Shut down an aristocrat deck at least 3 turns
Terminator : Shut down an artifact deck at least 3 turns
Peace out! : Won the game thanks to Mandate of peace
Cease and desist : Used opposition agent at instant speed to prevent a tutor shenanigan
Flower power! : Generate 5 mana or more with Carper of flowers
Native land : Prevented land destruction with Tomik
I didn't mean to do that : Win a game
Trap and a dream : Had Shelai, Gaddog, dauntless escort/safi and archon/Emissary on the battlefield at the same time
Heroes for hire : Had Tymna and Sidar on the field at the same time
Panther like a panther : Creatures can only be bocked by creature with reach
Pressure drop : Have creatures enter and stay tapped with meekstone + enters tapped.
