This deck is incredibly fun to play and the first list I made into paper for Modern. The deck is designed to sacrifice creatures and create Blood Artist/ Zulaport Cutthroat triggers and drain away your opponents life total. If your initial drain isn't enough, then you cast Return to the Ranks or Rally the Ancestors in order to bring your board state back and do it all again. This deck grinds incredibly well, can have surprising explosivity(is that a word?), chumps for days, and plays exceptionally well against all fair decks.
For this deck in particular, infect, life gain, and combo are the hard matchups. Gatekeeper of Malakir is the go to answer for infect, coincidentally giving us sb game against boggles. Fulminator Mage is the side choice for Tron, a deck that has a more inevitable late-game than us. Usually aggro is a hilariously good matchup, but Affinity doesn't hurt it's own life totals, so Stony Silence's come in against them to stamp out any uncertainty. Erebos, God of the Dead is our must answer to any decks playing life gain strategies. Archangel of Thune is to clutch the win for any of the bigger fair decks like Abzan, Jund, Zoo, etc.
I listed this deck as a work in progress for one reason- to include combo, or not include combo. This deck could easily be re-tooled into running Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit and Kitchen Finks for an infinite life gain combo. The only decks that won't immediately concede are infinite combo, infect, and possibly tron, though tron is a toss-up who wins if they decide to skip infinite combats and just see who mills themselves out first. They obviously lose if you choose to go to time.
In a format that is prepared for this deck, it will fold every time. Life gain and graveyard hate are both difficult obstacles to overcome. However, as an outlier deck it has a lot of potential to surprise people and sweep away the competition. Not to mention it's biggest draw for me, it is incredibly fun to play.
