The combo is casting Kaho, which only leaves 2 or 3 non-land cards in your deck. Use Mystical Tutor to cast Mana Severance, leaving 1 or 2 cards in your deck. Cerulean Wisps + Consider guarantees you can cast Laboratory Maniac then draw a card to win the game. The few non-basic lands are small utility effects. Not necessary, but they're basically strictly-better than basic Islands.

I've considered many, many cards to improve upon the original deck. The biggest thing holding back attempts at improvement are that any cards added then get in Lab Man's way. If you're trying to make the combo more resilient, you can put anti-magic on Kaho, but I've built this one for speed. She can win on turn 4 with a Mana Crypt by turn 2. Cast Mana Severance on turn 3, cast Lab Man and win on turn 4.
