Hello. First I would like to welcome you to the game. I hope you have a wonderful time playing and building.

So firstly when building a deck, you should always ask yourself what the deck is trying to do. How does this deck win? Do the cards work towards this goal? Do they do so efficiently? These are all important questions to ask when making a deck. In the case of your deck, I'm unsure what the deck is attempting to do. You have a lot of cards that do things, but not necessarily cards that all work together in a goal. Think about how you want to play, and look at the cards that best fit that idea.

Next, we will go over card numbers. Except for basic lands (and rare cases), there can only be up to four copies of a card in a deck. Now, having more copies of a card increases the chances of you drawing them in times of need. Some cards are critical to a deck, and should always have four copies. Other cards are powerful, but don't always need to have a full playset. For example, in a Aggro Red deck, it would be crazy not to run a playset of Lightning Bolt. It's best to look at your deck and find the cards that work the best with the goal your deck has. With single copies of many different cards, the deck loses consistently, which ends up hurting it.

I'm going to link you to some YouTube channels. They can be very helpful to players old and new. Decks builds are shown off, products are reviewed, just a whole lot of useful information. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2yRbSAO8xrlpTpvnaS2zRg and https://www.youtube.com/user/tolariancommunity/featured

A lot of this might not necessary be the help you were looking for, but at this point, I feel recommending cards and other things wouldn't be helpful. First, I believe you need to find how you want to play, the colors, how you want to win, and than look at your deck with a better idea of what you want it to be. When that is done, I will be happy to look again at the deck and give further advice.

I wish you the best of luck!

Hello.

So a few things. Having 80 cards makes your chances of getting the card you need very difficult. This is especially a problem given that your deck by and large only runs a single copy of each card. So my first suggestion is to get the deck down to 60.

Next, is the single copy of each card bit. You can run four of each card, so why not take advantage of that and put in copies of the best card in your deck? This makes your deck more consistent. The more copies you have, the higher chance you have of drawing it when you need it. Ask yourself what the key cards of your deck are.

You mentioned that your deck focus on many ways to attack the opponent. While this isn't a bad idea, it is important to have cards that work well together towards some sort of goal. I highly suggest watching this video to get a better understanding of what I mean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uV0k7DGU3_Y (a side note. GG Degree, the Mana Source, and Tolarian Community College are all YouTube channels I suggest watching. They are very helpful, and offer a lot of news as well as decks). When building decks, I always ask myself what the deck is trying to do. It's important to know so we can focus on the goal and make the deck more supporting of that goal.

While this is something that is more relevant to a complete deck, I'll bring it up now. Your mana base is vital. If you notice, you have two pie charts, mana distribution (what mana your cards need on average) and mana source distribution (what your lands produce). It is best for these two pie charts to be as equal as possible. For example, in your deck Black mana is used the most in your cards, with 62% of your deck needing it. However, your deck produces 52% Black mana. Meanwhile, your Blue cards make up 38%, but is getting 48% of your total mana. You don't need that much Blue mana producing cards. Always keep your mana base in mind when making decks.

I'm sure much of what I said is upsetting. In no way do I mean to discourage you from building decks or playing. In fact, I hope you continue to do both. Magic is a game that is meant to be played and enjoyed. Math just happens to play a large factor in it. I recommend looking up decks that seem interesting to you and seeing how they do things. And remember, the best way to get better at the game is to play more.

Good luck.

Deck Reviews / [Modern] BW Humans

http://deckstats.net/decks/24564/234757-we-have-reserves-

With the introduction of Thalia's Lieutenant, Humans are able to get a permanent boost, which greatly helps this deck out.

Our one drop of choice is Champion of the Parish. With nearly every creature in this deck being a Human, the Champion is our ideal turn one play and will grow fast. We also have the already mentioned Thalia's Lieutenant, which would give the Champion two counters, as long as every other Human on our side of the field one counter. Not only that, it will also get counters when Humans enter.

The other one drop creature is Bloodsoaked Champion. The card gives some nice early game pressure, and is fairly easy to bring back should it die. It can be replaced if needed.

Zulaport Cutthroat (the replacement to Blood Artist, being a Human and all) helps keep us alive just a bit longer while slowly hurting an opponent. Xathrid Necromancer is there to further capitalize on our creatures dying, giving us some nice 2/2 Zombie bodies, which will also trigger the Cutthroat upon death. The other card mixing with these two is Athreos, God of Passage. As we gain life and a Zombie friend, an opponent is given the option to lose three life or we get the card back in our hand. Given the low cost of creatures and enter the battlefield effects, playing them again would be nice. On the flip side, three damage to the face is nice as well. I find the card to be good enough to be in the deck.

Dark Confident, in addition to being a Human, is an amazing card that gives us fuel for a small cost of life.

Æther Vial works great in creature heavy decks, and this is no exception. Being able to simply play cards without paying the mana is amazing. For this deck, I would keep it at 2 charge counters.

The only other nonland card I consider a must have in this deck is Gather the Townsfolk. Playing it on turn two would help Champion of the Parish grow by quite a bit. It's a simple card in function, but really helps out. Of course, it can be replaced if need be.

I consider the rest of the spells in the deck, as well as the sideboard, to be dependent on the type of threats the individual player comes up against. They can be switched as need be. In the same way, land count is up to personal preference.

I really enjoy the deck. Last year I had the basic idea of the deck, but it felt like it was missing something. Now, I feel it is much more dangerous. I would love to hear suggestions on how to make it better!

Deck Reviews / Re: infect zombie

Hello.

So the first thing I want to comment on is the number of cards you have in your deck. 67 cards gives you a disadvantage compared to other decks, as it makes it less likely to draw the card you need. Your deck does not have anyway to take advantage of your larger size as well.

Next, I would ask the function of some equipment cards. Dragon Throne of Tarkir, while can be useful, is limited in what it can do in an aggro deck. Another card that is questionable is Acid-Spewer Dragon. While it can be used without dragons, it is over shadowed by other cards in doing so. Here is a list of creatures in Black with Deathtouch and Flying http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&text=+[flying]+[deathtouch]&color=+&format=+[%22Modern%22]

I want to ask you, what is your deck trying to do? I know it is an aggro infect deck, but how does it accomplish its goals? What is the key strategy? What cards in your deck get the job done best? Understanding how a deck works is highly important, along with its strengths and weaknesses.

Keep these ideas in mind, and you will come out with a solid deck. Good luck to you.

Deck Reviews / Re: [Modern] Milling on a BUDGET

That's a good question. When thinking about competitive, you must ask in the context of the meta. Are you talking about competitive to your playgroup and local game store, or just in the game of Magic itself?

Both answers are the same. You want your deck to do things as efficiently as possible to stop the other decks. This is done by fixing your mana base to be the most accurate, putting in cards that do more for less, perhaps adding in fetch lands to thin your deck. It really depends, as a good competitive deck is not clearly defined.

Hello.

So the first thing I want to touch on is your mana base. Your deck uses a lot more blue mana, but your land selection doesn't match this. You need to remove Swamp cards and include more Island cards. The two pie charts should be as close as possible.

Now, I'm going to list off some mill cards that you might be interested in.
  • Hedron Crab is a wonderful card for only one mana that will almost always mill an opponent for three each turn.
  • Traumatize, a card that can wreck a deck
  • Nemesis of Reason, which is tough and will mill for ten regardless of if it is blocked or not.

These cards could all be nice additions to your deck.

While that is all I have for now, I must congratulate you on making your first deck. It is quite solid, with only a few things needed to be tweaked. Well done.

Hello.

So this is a good deck. The only thing that needs work is your mana, as you need a bit more green to support your deck.

Besides that, I can't really think of a major problem. Well done.

I attempted to make a Merfolk deck with my commander being Sygg River Guide, but I didn't have the proper resources to really make it. If I try again, I'll go back to that idea.

Deck Reviews / Re: [Standard] Athreos Warriors
« em: Agosto 02, 2015, 11:34:33 pm »
Hello.

So I like the idea of your deck. I also have an Athreos deck. The thing to remember is that it works best if you can get a lot of cheep creatures out that can either hit for a lot on the field or as they die. In the spirit of the deck, and because your deck also has red, I suggest playing Vexing Devil. It goes perfectly with Athreos, and is a wonderful creature in general.

In addition, in case your opponent chooses to leave some key creatures dead, I would bring add some cards that bring creatures back. Return to the Ranks, Whip of Erebos, Immortal Servitude, and things like that could be a huge help.

The last card I want to suggest is Xathrid Necromancer. It goes extremely well with Athreos, and the large number of Human creature cards you have.

I think your deck, while needing a bit of work, is on its way to be a strong deck. Nice job.

Deck Reviews / Re: First deck i've made from scratch.
« em: Agosto 02, 2015, 11:20:07 pm »
Hello.

So the first thing that needs to be brought up is your mana base. It shouldn't produce black mana at all, as your deck runs mostly on green and white cards, your lands need to reflect. You want the two pie charts to be about even. So, add in lands that produce either white or green mana and take out others until you have the correct amount. In addition, the non land cards that produce mana are not needed. Fixing both of these problems will make your deck vastly better.

Now, you have a lot of singles in your deck. This makes it less consistent, which usually is problematic. I would suggest looking at the cards you think are the key cards and adding more of those and cards that compliment them. Example, you have Bonds of Faith in your deck, which is best used with Humans. You only have 5 Human creatures in your deck. So, I would either remove Bonds of Faith, or add more Humans.

Something everyone needs to ask themselves when building a deck is what that deck is trying to do? How does your deck plan on winning? Does this deck match how you play (aggressive, control, etc...? What can my deck do and what can my deck not do? These are all important questions. Knowing those answers will let you build stronger decks.

Overall, for the first deck you have made on your own, it is fine. Eventually, you will be able to make it even better. Good luck!

Hello.

So welcome to Magic: The Gathering! I hope you will have a fun time playing this game.

I want to take this moment to suggest a YouTube channel to you. It is Tolarian Community College. He does videos on a lot of Magic things, like products, deck types, and many others. I'll link you to one of his playlists on general advice. It is worth watching and can be very helpful.  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvqw7t0kbGX92NV-xGvcSNZaHllwwJ8H-

Now, for the deck.

Knowing what you want to do is an important thing. How do you want to win? How does your deck work? What are the most important cards in your deck? Can cards work with them?

You mentioned wanting to make opponents uncomfortable and gaining life. I would focus on those types of cards in your deck. Here is a list of all Black creatures with Lifelink (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?text=+%5Blifelink%5D&color=+%5BB%5D)

For a list of Deathtouch creatures, click this link. (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?name=+%5Bdeathtouch%5D%7C%7Ctext=+%5Bdeathtouch%5D&color=+%5BB%5D)

For a list of cards that make opponents discard cards, click this link. (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&text=+[opponent]+[discards]&color=+)

Now, for Everflowing Chalice. As you play this card, you pay pay two mana to add a counter to it. You can do this as many times as you are able. Once that is done, the card is now able to produce mana, depending on how many times you payed the two mana.

Example. You have 4 Swamp cards out. You play Everflowing Chalice. You can tap your 4 Swamp cards to pay the Mulitkicker cost twice. Now your Everflowing Chalice is able to produce two mana, because it was kicked two times. This means on your next turn, you will have access to 6 mana.

I would like to ask you what you want from your deck. If you give me a better idea of how you would like to play, I can help you out further.

If you have any questions about anything, please ask me. I am happy to help out.

Deck Reviews / Re: Green and Red Deck
« em: Junho 24, 2015, 09:39:13 pm »
Hello.

So the first thing to work on is the mana base. You use a bit more green mana than you are able to produce. Try removing a Mountain and adding a Forest. You want the two pie charts to be the same.

The next issue is having 73 cards in your deck. That puts you at a disadvantage, and you don't have cards in this deck that can turn that negative into a positive. We will come back to this.

As said before, you have some very expensive cards. This isn't inherently bad, but you don't have enough ways to make use of them.

I want to ask you what is your goal for this deck? What is it trying to do? How will it win games?

If you give a better understand of what you have in mind, I might be able to help you out.

Hello.

So your mana base is very off. You use a great amount more of green mana, but your lands don't support it, and I don't think Sylvan Caryatid will help. Try removing Swamps and add in Forests. You will want the two pie charts to match.

Deck Reviews / Re: Heroic G/W deck... any tips?
« em: Junho 23, 2015, 07:27:41 pm »
Hello.

So I going to address really fast the issue of rotation and Standard. You have a few months before rotation happens, so you could build a deck. But I would suggest trying to play the Modern format. There is no rotation in it. It is my preferred format.

Now, Fabled Hero is a great card. My friend has a Heroic deck and it is his key card. If you can find one, I recommend it. TCGPlayer has it around 60 cents, so perhaps you could get them from there.

I would also recommend the card Gods Willing. It is a easy protection spell that will activate Heroic. Another card is Gift of Immortality. It will help you keep some key creatures that you might need. The final card that activates Heroic is Spectra Ward. It will make your creatures absolutely a nightmare to deal with.

A creature you might like it Centaur Battlemaster. It is a higher mana cost, but it gets three counters for each card.

Hope your deck building is going well!

Hello.

Before I talk about the deck, I want to point out that your deck is not Standard as this post suggests. Runner's Bane and Goblin Test Pilot push your deck into Modern territory.

So I think you have a good land count. I would suggest removing Evolving Wilds, as I don't think you will need it.
