So I wanted to try to build an aggro deck with two creatures that doubled as anthem effects. Without going up in curve to play Trostani, I decided to try to put Judith, the Scourge Diva and Benalish Marshal in the same deck. This task is nearly impossible using traditional mana bases, however if I play Unclaimed Territory naming humans it makes it far more plausible.
After justifying the inclusion of Marshal and Judith in the same deck I started looking for other Mardu colored humans to fill out the deck. Here i what I concluded:
a) Fireblade Artist
*while being difficult to cast, he provides an alternative way to finish off games and haste is a bonus to get in a few extra points of damage at any point of the game.
b) Dire-Fleet Daredevil
gives the deck a way to play removal without having to dedicate a ton of slots to it.
great to have versatility in the creatures, decent on turn 2 while being far better later in games.
c) Rix Maadi Reveler
*same idea as DFD, ok on turn 2 but even better later in games.
d) Tajic, Legion's Edge
*I like everything Tajic brings to the table, however I only see room for 1 copy.
e) Haazda Marshal
*Getting a free creature or two throughout a game is a decent reward with 7 anthem effects floating around.
f) Dauntless Bodyguard
*2 power on turn 1 is nothing to sneeze at and as a midgame play it is nice to target your anthems.
Other Cards:
g) Legion's Landing
*not a human, but can be easily cast. It has far more upside than any human we can cast.
h) Skewer the Critics
*it will cost 1 and is our back pocket way to finish off games or clear the path.
i) Light up the Stage
*keeps the deck rolling when it runs out of gas.
Conclusions:
*most creatures have more uses then just attacking. This versatility gives this aggro deck a better chance to win in matchups where aggro would struggle.
*the ability to do a lot of incidental damage gets the deck past board stalls and provides those last few points of damage aggro decks often struggle with.
*I like that the deck has pseudo card draw built in, where you do not have to sacrifice your aggressive play to get some of your hand back.
